There is some pressure on Maurizio Sarri even though the owner has come out and publicly backed him.

He will be going into the final year of his contract this summer and this is usually the time where you begin discussions about renewing those contracts. I think both sides are considering their options.

Who would have thought Bayern are going into this game as underdogs...

If Bayern get knocked out then Harry Kane would have gone 10 seasons without winning anything at club level.

I really do want Kane to win a trophy, but the schadenfreude of Bayern being knocked out by Lazio and their season being over by the beginning of March is too delicious to turn down

These Bayern Munich fans have gone through it all before. They're likely thinking, 'This is probably a blip, and we may well come out tonight and hammer Lazio,' - they're capable of doing it.

We have all seen German teams, not just club teams but the national side, come into competitions thinking they've got no chance, and when the final comes around there they are striding out onto the pitch. Do not write them off.

At the moment the fans are putting up with it, they are accepting it to some degree, some grumbles, yes. But the grumbles will grow to a lot more than that if they go out tonight.

The tie is well balanced, they're 1-0 down and Lazio aren't having a great season.

Real Sociedad are relying on the atmosphere created at a sold-out Reale Arena to help them achieve the seemingly impossible.

The Spanish side have been struggling for form in recent weeks, having won only one of their last nine competitive matches,

But Real Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil believes his team are capable of knocking out the French giants.

"We want to eliminate PSG, at least I believe that. Hopefully after the game we'll all be happy celebrating the pass, it would be a bombshell."

Ciro Immobile's penalty earned Lazio victory over Bayern Munich in the first leg, but their form has dropped since then.

They have managed just one win in four games in Serie A, losing the other three.

Their last fixture was a 1-0 defeat at home to AC Milan which saw Maurizio Sarri’s side drop to ninth in the table.

"We are aware of how difficult it is going to be, which ought to give us that spirit of sacrifice," Sarri said.

"Nothing is impossible in football, this must give us courage. We must be fired up and angry."

The way that Bayern are playing right now, if they keep performing at this level, they won't get through tonight.

They have really been underwhelming recently. The fact that Thomas Tuchel has been sacked at the end of the season and is in this lame duck position, shows you how things have gone.

To be honest, one of the local papers was calling it "Explosion or implosion?" tonight. And I think it is that simple. Ten points behind Leverkusen at the top of the table, out of the DFB Cup to third tier opposition in the second round, and if they don't win tonight, it would be a disaster of a season.

Bayern Munich are under masses of pressure tonight. The expectations for Bayern, and particularly for Harry Kane, was that he would go there and finally he can win some trophies.

Unbelievably, absolutely unbelievably, they are 10 points off the top of the league, and they are not playing near well enough to claw that back.

One statistic that really stands out to me is that they have lost one in every four games this season, which is just unthinkable for them.

They are 1-0 down in this tie, and if they don't turn this around then their season is basically dead.

Paris St-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe has been directly involved in 34 goals in 31 away appearances in the Champions League (23 goals, 11 assists) – indeed, this is the most of any player away from home in the competition since the start of 2016-17.

Had Kylian Mbappe been staying, he would be their best player, but now he is leaving Luis Enrique will be thinking 'I'm here, but he won't be next season, so if I don't think Mbappe is doing enough in a game I can take him off and no-one will say anything.

It would have been a crisis, a huge deal, if Kylian had been taken off and "rested" while he was still under contract at the club. That's not the case, or won't be much longer. People have moved on pretty quickly.

The only thing we are all wondering is what sort of relationship will Mbappe and Luis Enrique have between now and the end of the season?

Will they hate each other? Will they be at war with each other? Will they get on? How is Kylian taking this early substitution etcetera? All of this we don't yet know.

It feels like PSG were already preparing for this [Kylian Mbappe's departure] and knew it was a possibility.

It's going to be very interesting to see this new PSG in the summer, a PSG that's supposed to be less 'bling bling' and bringing players through and promoting them.

Will they stay true to that or feel the need to go out and get a superstar - which is how they have acted over the last 12 years?

Luis Enrique does have to start planning for next season but it's a curious policy because Mbappe is their best chance of winning the Champions League. You need to make the most of him while he is still there.

  15. 'Match too important to comment on Mbappe'published at 19:22 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March 2024

Luis Enrique refused to entertain questions about Kylian Mbappe in the build up to tonight's game.

The PSG boss has rarely left the France striker on the pitch for a full 90 minutes since he agreed to join Real Madrid at the end of this season.

"It's very easy to manage [the flood of Mbappe questions], I just take whatever questions the journalists want and answer whatever I want, that's my formula," Enrique said.

"The match is so important that there are no comments to be made [about Mbappe]."

I would not be surprised in the slightest if Thomas Tuchel leaves early should Bayern go out of the Champions League tonight.

They do not tend to do that though Bayern, they usually leave it until the end of the season, they are very good at planning.

But we are starting to see the odd story coming out about the players not being happy with the manager. When that sort of stuff starts to happen, and if the board finds out that it is indeed true, there will be no point in keeping him on. They know he is leaving anyway.

If they do go out then there is nothing left to play for, aside from second in the league, so they might as well give the new guy a run at it, but the thing is that he has to be available now.

There have been suggestions that should Bayern Munich exit the Champions League tonight then Thomas Tuchel's departure could be hastened.

"Not from my side," he said, when asked if Bayern's potential elimination could mean an immediate exit for him.

"I know what we have agreed on and what we have communicated but you can be sure there is no one who has more ambition than me to win the game."

We already know Thomas Tuchel is leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season, and he will surely want to leave with a trophy after their poor domestic form this term.

The former Chelsea boss knows it will not be easy against Lazio tonight.

“The situation is clear and that is we must win, by two goals, and against a Sarri team. It’s a big challenge,” he said.

“Patience is required. It’s about not getting frustrated, not losing the plot. But we have no time to lose. We can’t wait till we play the first attack, play the ball in behind. Time is on Lazio’s side.”

Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel spoke about Harry Kane in his pre-match news conference.

The England captain has been prolific for club and country this season with 35 goals in 37 appearances.

"It's not necessary to give him additional motivation," Tuchel said.

"There's no doubt about how he behaves. He has a big impact on every team, on every player. He's not a loud speaker, but the way he does things is very focused, always has an impact on the team. It's a pleasure to have him in the team.

"He'll perform. We can rely on him 100 percent."
