  3. 'Rangers fans saw this team's heart'published at 20:31 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

FT: Rangers 0-1 Benfica (agg 2-3)

More from Rangers manager Philippe Clement: "These fans are used to a lot of quality, a lot of great moments.

"It is what I said from the beginning, these fans know football. They know what they want, to see a team that has a heart for Rangers. They saw that in the two games.

"When you lose games in that way you are disappointed, like I am now, but you are also proud and I think the fans understand that.

"It shows this togetherness that is really strong for the moment in the club - that can't get lost anymore."

    Steven Thompson
Former Rangers striker on BBC Sportsound

The players gave everything, the supporters were phenomenal, but I think Rangers just fell short tonight.

It is now about forgetting it and concentrating on a season that could go down in the club's history if everything goes to plan.

  5. 'No discussions' with Southgate - Butlandpublished at 20:25 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

FT: Rangers 0-1 Benfica (agg 2-3)

Here is more from Rangers keeper Jack Butland on missing out on the England squad for their upcoming friendlies.

"No discussions [with Gareth Southgate]," he tells TNT Sports.

"If you're name is being chucked in there it's because you're doing something right.

"So for me when I found out I wasn't in the squad it was just back to normal, continue doing what I'm doing here which is what got me in the conversation in the first place.

"Could I? Should I? It doesn't really matter. I've worked hard enough and done enough. Whatever the decision there are three fantastic goalkeepers going and I'll just keep knocking on the door and see what happens."

  6. Butland 'proud' of performancepublished at 20:23 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland tells TNT Sports: "Really disappointed because I thought the lads across the two legs were unbelievable.

"We dominated the game today. We drew at their place conceding a questionable penalty and an own goal, and it's a counter attack from our own corner that has undone us.

"I'm really proud of the lads. Nobody gave us a chance tonight but we held our own and if we went through it wouldn't have been a disservice.

"We played some really good football, got into good areas and caused them a lot of problems but didn't quite find that finishing touch.

"But we deserved it, we really did. We've got great delivery and sometimes might drop for you, but to be honest we were brilliant and could have scored in many other ways.

"That would not have been a smash and grab from us at all, it was a really good performance."

Rangers failed to score for just second time under Philippe Clement tonight.

It's also just a third defeat in 32 games.

  8. Clement backs Rangers to respondpublished at 20:17 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

FT: Rangers 0-1 Benfica (agg 2-3)

More from Rangers manager Philippe Clement, who says his team "is still growing".

"If I see where the team was two months ago, they could not compete in this way with Benfica.

"The team is still growing. Between last week and now, it is a big difference. The team is growing and we need to adapt to the circumstances.

"As a Scottish club you need to be really proud with what the players showed because it was really tight margins. If you look back last week, if you don't concede the penalty, which was not a penalty, it could have gone to extra time now.

"We look at ourselves, what we can do better, the players showed they can be better on the ball but they defended really well also.

"We will continue that story in the next weeks and months. We need to leave this European competition behind us and we need to be really proud.

"I don't have any doubt that there will be one player in the dressing room saying we are out of Europe that's our season over - no totally not. I know my boys, I know my dressing room. They will recover well this evening and tomorrow they will come in with a lot of hunger to be ready for Sunday."

  9. 'Everybody raised their level' - Clementpublished at 20:12 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

FT: Rangers 0-1 Benfica (agg 2-3)

Rangers manager Philippe Clement: "I think it was a close tie but I am proud of what my players showed. We played a better game on the ball than what we showed in Lisbon.

"You need to be on your toes to compete with these teams that have a much bigger budget.

"Everybody did that, everybody raised their level. You need to take the moments and we didn't take ours enough.

"I saw a team who was brave, I saw a team that wanted to dominate the game. Benfica wanted to start by pressing us like they did in Lisbon but we were much better on the ball today.

"It is about taking the important moments which we didn't do enough."

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has just taken his seat at his post-match presser.

You can listen to it live on Sportsound.

He says he's "proud" of what he watched from his side.

We'll have more from him soon.

  11. 'Clement will still be proud'published at 20:06 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

FT: Rangers 0-1 Benfica (agg 2-3)

    Stuart McCall
Former Rangers midfielder on BBC Sportsound

I think Clement will be proud of the efforts.

Benfica have got better players there's no doubt about that but Rangers gave it a go.

From the goal going in, there was still 30 minutes and Rangers didn't lay a glove on them.

  12. What's next?published at 20:03 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

FT: Rangers 0-1 Benfica (agg 2-3)

On the topic of Rangers' domestic season, their next game sees them return to league action when they travel to Dundee on Sunday.

FT: Rangers 0-1 Benfica (agg 2-3)

Just look how dejected those Rangers players are.

It's understandable, of course, but they cannot allow this disappointment to derail their season.

The League Cup is in the bag, they're top of the Premiership and a Scottish Cup semi is on the way.

    Still plenty to play for.

  14. 'Rangers didn't do enough'published at 19:56 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

FT: Rangers 0-1 Benfica (agg 2-3)

    Steven Thompson
Former Rangers striker on BBC Sportsound

Tonight you would've said with the home crowd behind them Rangers had a slight advantage.

Quite simply Rangers didn't do enough.

Benfica limited Rangers, they had some very solid performances defensively and they played a counter-attacking game.

They probably should have made more of the opportunities they had.

Rangers, for all the control and possession they had, didn't make the most of it.

They did not work the keeper anywhere near enough. Rangers are better than what they showed this evening but I thought Benfica performed well tonight.

Have a look at number eight there for Benfica, Fredrik Aursnes.

He clearly has a lot of trust in Rafa Silva, he knew that was going in before any of us.

And no wonder, that was his 17th goal of the season.

  16. 'Goal sucked life out of Rangers'published at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

FT: Rangers 0-1 Benfica (agg 2-3)

    Derek McInnes
Kilmarnock manager and ex-Rangers midfielder on TNT Sports

Benfica just had better forward players than Rangers. The goal sucked the life out of Rangers, they never really responded.

There's no shame in losing to a team like this. Maybe in a year, Philippe Clement's side might have a better shot in a tie like this.

  17. A lot of ball but no end productpublished at 19:48 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

FT: Benfica 0-1 Rangers (agg 2-3)

According to Opta, Rangers had 59% of possession.

However, when it comes to expected goals Rangers rank is just 0.54.

Benfica's is 1.57. That tells us Rangers have struggled to create quality chances compared to the visitors tonight.

  18. 'Benfica deserved win'published at 19:45 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March

FT: Rangers 0-1 Benfica (agg 2-3)

    Ally McCoist
Former Rangers striker & manager on TNT Sports

It was a great tie, I really enjoyed both games. There wasn't an awful lot between the sides but I've got to be brutally honest, Benfica were better in possession and certainly tonight created the better chances.

In Rafa Silva, they had the best player on the pitch. They played the better football and deserved to go through.

The Rangers fans are still in fine voice and they are sticking around to give their players an ovation.

Their season is far from over.
