Airdrieonians player-manager Rhys McCabe tells BBC Scotland: “What a lovely day for it. Beats the last number of weeks when it’s been raining. Looking forward to it.

“It always is [tough to pick the side]. People train on a daily basis to give you a headache. It’s a final so there is that extra pressure. We’ve went with a team that can get the job done.

“Going back to the Raith game, we were away from home, they were scoring goals at will. But we knew areas we could hurt them. But today, it’s a fresh challenge against somebody we don’t play every week."

  17. How's it been going?published at 16:11 Greenwich Mean Time 24 March

The New Saints v Airdrieonians (16:15)

When it comes to form, there is no other team like The New Saints.

TNS have won their last 26 games and remain unbeaten since 1 August, 2023 in all competitions – when defeated by Luxembourger side Swift Hesperange in the Uefa Conference League.

Quite frankly, The Diamonds are not in the same stratosphere when it comes to form. But they are still looking sharp coming into this one.

Rhys McCabe’s men are unbeaten in their last five – winning three and drawing two. Last Saturday’s 5-2 trouncing of Championship strugglers Arbroath was an ideal prelude ahead of today's final.

Rhys McCabe’s side defeated Lowland League outfits University of Stirling and Rangers B, before squeezing past Greenock Morton on penalties in the final eight at Cappielow.

Nikolay Todorov’s early strike at Stark’s Park saw The Diamonds progress to the final at the expense of Raith Rovers.

The New Saints v Airdrieonians (16:15)

The Diamonds’ player-manager Rhys McCabe could become the youngest manager to win the Scottish Challenge Cup this afternoon.

The 31-year-old has already overseen the club’s rise to the second-tier since taking over in May 2022, and will be looking to replicate the success of the 2008 Challenge Cup winners today.

The then-called Airdrie United lifted the trophy after defeating Derek Adams’ Ross County on penalties at McDiarmid Park – the club’s only senior cup triumph to date.
