Republic of Ireland captain Seamus Coleman speaking to Virgin Media after the game: "It was frustrating, it took us a while to get to grips with them in the first half, but then we got some instructions and we got a bit braver in pressing them a bit more and we were more organised. I thought we were on top then from then on in.

"We were unlucky not to score, I can't remember them creating much apart from the free-kick and we penned them in for quite a bit of the game in my opinion, it felt comfortable in the second half, we just need to find a way to score some goals.

"It has been a disappointing result, but a very enjoyable and positive week, we should beat Belgium and got something out of that Switzerland game, but the performances were promising."

It's all over at the Aviva as the Republic of Ireland fall to a narrow defeat after Xherdan Shaqiri's fine free-kick in the first half.

We're into three minutes of additional time at the Aviva Stadium, with the Republic of Ireland's hopes of a late equaliser fading.

Finn Azaz again goes close for the Republic of Ireland, dancing inside before seeing his shot blocked.

It has been a brief, but bright cameo from Azaz.

What an introduction that would have been for Finn Azaz, who, moments after being introduced, rides a challenge, but chooses to pass instead of shooting when he gets into the area.

The Republic of Ireland are pressing hard for an equaliser in these last five minutes.

Adam Idah strides forward and lets fly from distance, but his shot curls over the crossbar.

Idah may have been better placed to slip in fellow substitute Mark Sykes, who had peeled off to his right.

Two further changes for the Republic of Ireland as Callum O'Dowda and Mark Sykes replace Robbie Brady and Sammie Szmodics.

Brady put in two solid performances this international window which will certainly give the new permanent manager food for thought going forward.

Fabian Schar also goes off for Switzerland, with Becir Omeragic taking his place.

Adam Idah has had a positive impact on the game since coming on, holding the ball up well. but the Republic of Ireland are still yet to force Yvon Mvogo into a save as we approach the final 10 minutes of the game.

Xherdan Shaqiri, who looks to be the match winner, is replaced by Noah Okafor with 15 minutes of the contest remaining.

Shaqiri proved he still has it with his performance out there this evening.

Evan Ferguson comes as deep as the halfway line to get a touch of the ball.

It is hard to see him ending that goal drought I alluded to earlier as the Republic of Ireland just can't get him into the game.

Robbie Brady finds Matt Doherty with a searching ball into the box and he nods it across for Adam Idah, whose overhead kick is well wide.

A miss which sums up the Republic of Ireland's lack of ruthlessness in front of goal as they approach almost three hours of football without a goal in this international break.

Three changes for Switzerland as Silvan Widmer, Vincent Sierro and Dan Ndoye make way for Kevin Mbabu, Denis Zakaria and debutant Derek Kutesa.

Adam Idah, Will Smallbone and Matt Doherty are on in place of Andrew Omobamidele, Jason Knight and Mikey Johnston.The latter has struggled this evening with the Republic of Ireland's lack of threat going forward a factor.

The resulting corner comes to nothing which will frustrate John O'Shea given how good Robbie Brady's deliveries from a dead ball situation have been.
