  2. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 20:47 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Switzerland

A change for Switzerland ahead of the second half as Granit Xhaka goes off to be replaced by Remo Freuler.

The Republic of Ireland midfield will appreciate that substitution as Xhaka had been running the show for the Swiss.

HT: Republic of Ireland 0-1 Switzerland

I think this supporter sums up the first half from a Republic of Ireland perspective.

Here's hoping that John O'Shea's half-time team talk inspires a better performance in the second half.

  4. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:34 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Switzerland

Switzerland lead at the break at the Aviva after Xherdan Shaqiri's superb free-kick.

Granit Xhaka also hit the post for the away side, with Mikey Johnston squandering the Republic of Ireland's best chance as he headed wide from close range.

It has been a poor showing from the Republic so far, and John O'Shea will hope for an improved display with some shots on targets on the second half.

  8. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 20:26 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Switzerland

Gavin Bazunu breathes a huge sigh of relief as his poor clearance falls to Granit Xhaka, who arrows an effort towards goal which cannons off the inside of the post before Bazunu can scramble it clear.

A nervy moment for the Southampton goalkeeper.

  9. Postpublished at 20:25 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Switzerland

A huge chance squandered for the Republic of Ireland as Robbie Brady swings in another fine delivery from the corner, but Evan Ferguson and Andrew Omobamidele go for the same ball, with neither able to get a good connection on it as the ball sails wide.

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Switzerland

Robbie Brady's whipped free-kick eventually falls to the back post and Dara O'Shea heads it back across to Andrew Omobamidele, who is unable to generate much power as he heads it straight at Yvon Mvogo.

The last five minutes have been better from the Republic of Ireland, and they now have their first corner of the game.

  11. Postpublished at 20:20 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Switzerland

Mikey Johnston is found with space and time on the left hand side and drives to the byline before seeing his low cross cleared.

Johnston should have done better with Evan Ferguson and Sammie Szmodics to aim for in the box.

  12. Postpublished at 20:17 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Switzerland

Evan Ferguson's four month goal drought is well-documented at this stage, and whilst he missed a penalty and a header against Belgium, he has not had a similar sight of goal in the opening 30 minutes and has been a rather peripheral figure as the Republic of Ireland struggle going forward.

  13. Postpublished at 20:15 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Switzerland

Sammie Szmodics has his head in his hands as, after Jason Knight pinches the ball off Xherdan Shaqiri, he fails to find the Blackburn midfielder, who was racing through on goal.

The Republic of Ireland will be keen to get Szmodics on the ball after his impressive showing on Saturday and the fact he has netted 17 times in the Championship this season.

GOAL - Republic of Ireland 0-1 Switzerlandpublished at 20:11 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March

    Xherdan Shaqiri (23 mins)

Xherdan Shaqiri steps up and curls the free-kick right into the far corner to give Switzerland the lead at the Aviva Stadium and punish John O'Shea's side.

There will be question marks over whether the Republic of Ireland wall could have defender better, but take nothing away from the strike from Shaqiri, which was inch-perfect.

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

Zeki Amdouni bustles past two Republic of Ireland players before he is brought down by Burnley teammate Dara O'Shea right on the edge of the area.

Xherdan Shaqiri is standing over it for the Swiss.

  16. Postpublished at 20:07 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

The Republic of Ireland have faded after that bright opening and the muted atmosphere in the stadium reflects that as Switzerland start to dominate possession.

  17. Postpublished at 20:01 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

Vincent Sierro tries his luck from range, but his effort is an easy take for Gavin Bazunu.

  18. Di Matteo in the buildingpublished at 20:01 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

An interested spectator at the game this evening is Roberto Di Matteo, who has been pictured at the Aviva with Jonathan Hill, head of the Football Association Ireland (FAI).

Coincidence, or is the former Chelsea and Aston Villa boss putting his hat in the ring for the permanent Republic of Ireland job?

  19. Postpublished at 19:58 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

Granit Xhaka plays a searching ball out to Dan Ndoye and he comes inside and sees his shot blocked by Nathan Collins before it can trouble Gavin Bazunu.

The Swiss are starting to grow into the game.

  20. Postpublished at 19:55 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

John O'Shea's side look comfortable in possession in these early stages, but have yet to fashion an opportunity on goal.

The game may only be nine minutes old but I am already tired watching Jason Knight hustling and harrying the Swiss defence at every opportunity, he has been everywhere so far.
