Williams's Valtteri Bottas was third fastest and chief technical officer Pat Symonds said he was optimistic the team had made progress from 2014.

"Valtteri's comments (about the car) were very positive," said Symonds. "Initial comments do count for quite a lot and I was very encouraged by what Valtteri said.

"I spent a fair amount of time talking to him about the detail of it and it gives me good confidence we have made a step forward and that is a good start to the season."

Speaking about rivals Mercedes' impressive form, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said: "It's just showing off really - to turn up and do 157 laps is taking the mickey.

"They had a good car last year and have evolved it. They are the benchmark, no doubt about it. We have made good progress and hopefully we can get closer to them."

It was all going so well for Lewis Hamilton, the world champion following up his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg's impressive 157 laps on day one with 91 of his own before a water leak curtailed his running earlier.

McLaren's struggles continued, meanwhile, with Jenson Button failing to set a representative lap time as he completed just six laps. That's just 10% of the target set by racing director Eric Boullier.

F1 journalist Dan Knutson in Jerez: "Pirelli brought its full range of Formula 1 tyres to Jerez. The hard, medium, soft and super soft compound dry weather tyres - with the orange, white, yellow and red sidewalls.

"Plus the intermediate rain tyres with the green sidewalls, and the extreme wet weather tyres with the blue sidewalls. Max Verstappen has the intermediates on his Toro Rosso as he circulates on the wet track."

That's a shame for Lewis Hamilton, whose opening day of testing is hampered for the second successive year. The Briton didn't manage the mammoth 157 laps his team-mate Nico Rosberg did yesterday, but 91 isn't a bad return. It's still more than anyone else has managed so far today.
