“Sebastian Vettel was low key about Ferrari’s form and expectations after practice on Friday, saying: ‘We have to improve. We are a little bit too far behind and I would like the gap to those behind to be bigger.’ On headline times, it did not look great, Vettel was fifth fastest and nearly 0.8secs off the pace-setting Mercedes, and Kimi Raikkonen a couple of places further back. But the long runs told a different story.

"Raikkonen did a particularly impressive stint on the super-soft in second practice, twice as long as either Mercedes driver managed and every bit as quick on average. And there was also little to separate Vettel and Rosberg on the soft. Ferrari won’t beat the Mercedes in qualifying, but they could be a threat in the race.”

Ferrari, and more specifically Sebastian Vettel, have proven to be 'the best of the rest' this season.

They were the only team apart from Mercedes to notch up wins, with Vettel taking three race victories, and they are determined to go even faster in 2016 to put up a real fight for the title.

Got to love this pic, by the way. Kimi Raikkonen is on the world's fastest rollercoaster and still manages to maintain the disinterested look of a driving instructor.

All may not be as it seems at Mercedes.

The Daily Mail is reporting, external that the team's non executive chairman, Niki Lauda, and team principal Toto Wolff have fallen out, with Lauda possibly even quitting after Sunday's race.

The Telegraph is also reporting, external something similar, saying that there is "no love lost" between Lauda and Wolff, with a split caused by the saga over engines for Red Bull.

A quick recap of Friday's practice. Lewis Hamilton finished fastest in FP1, with Nico Rosberg topping the timesheet in FP2.

There was, though, very little between the two. Hamilton had been fastest by 0.141 seconds in the first session, but Rosberg pipped the world champion by 0.138secs in the second session.

“One race to go, nothing apparently hanging on it, but Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are still busy scoring psychological points off each other. Well aware that the 2016 championship effectively started three races ago, they are playing mind games, and using the media to do it. After Hamilton’s claim following the last race in Brazil - and repeated here in Yas Marina - that ‘something had changed in the car since Singapore’ to make him less comfortable, it was Rosberg’s turn on Friday, pointing out his high-mileage engine will put him at a disadvantage this weekend.

“Rosberg says it is ‘costing me straight-line speed’. Mercedes admit ‘there will be a difference’ but point out that the engine is within in its normal life and won the last two grands prix, and that it is ‘more a case of having fewer laps available in certain modes’. It should not have a significant effect on what looks like another close battle for pole, in other words.”

In Formula 1, there is rarely time to relax.

Lewis Hamilton may have ultimately won the title at a canter, but there will be a niggling concern about the way the season is ending.

For someone who doesn't like losing, Hamilton has been second best to Nico Rosberg in qualifying in each of the last five grands prix. He certainly won't want to see that extended to six.

There may be nothing at stake in terms of this season's championship, but the psychological battle for the 2016 title is well under way...
