Gene Haas, owner of Haas, whose driver Esteban Gutierrez was involved with that Fernando Alonso crash: "Our car came out the better, Alonso's car was destroyed. He was up and walking and that was important. In Nascar we have incidents like this almost every race and we're pretty used to it."

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, fourth when the red flag came out, on BBC Radio 5 live: "I'll prob watch that crash back after the race. We're happy with our own pace. I was having a blast out there."

Clare_Star: If anything Gutierrez looks more stunned than Alonso. Kudos #f1 for keeping our boys safe

Joanna Harran: A miracle Fernando walked away from that crash. No car left.

Sean Richardson: Replay confirms my suspicious that GUT twitched left before Aonso made contact. Race rustiness?

Fernando Alonso waves to the crowd as he makes his way back to the McLaren garage. He's no longer limping as well which is good to see.

Everyone comes in to pit, so time for a catch up on where we were before the accident.

"The McLaren is in a real mess. It's always worrying to see a car upside down. It's very scary what we're looking at. It seemed to me Gutierrez had gone off the power and that caught Alonso out."

Red flag as replays show how that accident unfolded. Fernando Alonso is making a move on Esteban Gutierrez, who brakes earlier than Alonso expected on the approach to Turn 3 and the McLaren's front right tyre collides with the rear of the Haas and Alonso is vaulted into the gravel, rolling into the barrier.

    My word.

The camera cuts to Esteban Gutierrez in the gravel, but behind him is Fernando Alonso, whose McLaren is crumpled into the barrier! Thankfully Alonso emerges but is walking very gingerly.

The flurry of first stops has elevated Kimi Raikkonen into the lead, with Lewis Hamilton second but the pair are yet to make their first stops as they continue on rapidly wearing supersofts. The lack of grip takes its toll as Sebastian Vettel, on fresh supsersofts, breezes past Hamilton and into second.

"Come on box me, my front is really suffering."

One guess as to who this is on his radio?

That's right, it's Mr Charming Kimi Raikkonen to his Ferrari team.

Mercedes are the first of the big guns to blink first as Nico Rosberg makes his first stop, swapping supersofts for softs. He re-emerges for Nico Hulkenberg approaching Turn 1, but Rosberg squeezes through to take fourth.

Sebastian Vettel responds by making his first stop.
