Kimi fans, here's something to brighten your day.

The great man has just shot to the top of the timesheet, clocking a 1:24.460 on the soft compound.

Yeah it is testing and yeah it is pretty meaningless, but let's nevertheless celebrate the only way Kimi knows how, by half-heartedly raising our hands in the air and forcing a half smile.

I like to think that Nico Rosberg, while sitting and watching Lewis Hamilton hammering it around the circuit, checks his phone only to be a little perplexed by the image of the a-ha trio on his Twitter timeline.

I mean look at this, Mercedes are just having a mess around.

"Wait for it, wait for it, wait for it...."

    "Nah, not coming in."

From cornrows to bleach blond, Lewis Hamilton went through many different looks last season and this looks to be a new one for 2016. Bookish.

You can't blame him for keeping himself occupied with other things, given how breezy things are going for Mercedes so far in testing.

From what I've seen there have been no problems to iron out, and they apparently might not even bother pulling out the soft tyres at all this weekend to get a fast lap in and instead are working on upping their mileage.

Seventy seven laps and counting so far today for Hamilton, with one hour to go until lunch.

Oh dear, never a fan of "out later on". Disconcertingly vague.

Still, at least Fernando Alonso can get the pick of the lunchtime tapas.

It’s a blow for McLaren and Honda.

Fernando Alonso has not set a time yet today and his car is up on jacks in the garage. Honda has ‘noticed some anomalies in the water pressure data’ and says it is working to get the car back on track as soon as possible. They have said they believe Alonso will be out later on.

  11. What's going on at McLaren?published at 10:41

Max Verstappen may be smashing through laps but still no movement at McLaren, Fernando Alonso has been stuck on three for a while now.

I said I'd keep an eye on that one and Andrew Benson has an update...

There is a, hopefully brief, lull on the track at the moment. There's one person out there - Lewis Hamilton.

    Of course it is.

Evidently, it is a tough life for the drivers not on testing duty.

Call this an endurance run, Valtteri? You want to try running alongside the Manchester Ship Canal on a cold February morning.

Can sometimes take me 30 minutes to defrost my fingers before work.

Plenty are asking the below question. I've not seen a explanation for that scenario, but I guess the finer details of the system will be ironed out if it is rubber-stamped.

Either that or we'll just wing it.

Leonardo Di Caprio really nailed the cool '90s look didn't he? I had a curtains hairstyle. I thought it was awesome.

Looking back at old pictures of myself confirms it was not awesome.

Testing is not just for the drivers to get themselves up to speed for the season ahead, it also offers the chance for the mechanics to hone their skills with a bit of pit-stop practice.

  19. Elimination is the name of the gamepublished at 09:52 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2016

You will probably be aware of the proposal to change qualifying this year into a driver-by-driver elimination system. More details of how that will work are emerging. The plan is to keep qualifying in three sessions but, after an initial period of time in each session, the slowest driver will be eliminated every 90 seconds, rather than doing it all at once at the end of the session.

People have wondered whether a driver will be able to finish a lap he is on at that cut-off point. And the answer is no. If he is last at the cut-off point, he is out, no matter how good the lap he is on. The only time this does not apply is at the end of each of the three sessions when, as now, the driver can complete a flying lap he is on when the chequered flag comes out.

This is all subject to confirmation assuming the teams don’t come up with any major flaws in the plan after they have spent a few days analysing its potential effects. The FIA, which proposed it, wants to introduce uncertainty, feeling the weekends can tend to become formulaic.

Nothing major to report from what's happening on the track.

Kevin Magnussen still has the fastest time, set on the softs, but Kimi Raikkonen has just improved in second with a 1:25.614. Still no time for McLaren.

As we wait for more to happen, time to take a look at probably the biggest story to come from yesterday - changes to qualifying that could come in this season.
