For anyone hoping for signs that Mercedes could face some serious opposition this season, pre-season testing has been a slow drip of constant disappointments. On Tuesday there was another.

The world champions finally unleashed the pace of their car during what Nico Rosberg called a “qualifying practice” and he was 0.2secs faster than his closest challenger Valtteri Bottas, who was using a tyre Pirelli estimate to be 1.4secs quicker.

The Ferrari has looked at least half a second off the pace so far and its reliability appears a little suspect, too.

Can Sebastian Vettel leave a different impression by the end of his penultimate day in the car on Wednesday?

If anyone can rock up to work on a one-wheeled scooter with dogs in tow, the Formula 1 world champion can.

And why not add a bit of excitement to his time in Barcelona? After five days of testing, Mercedes are ominously looking strong once again.

    More of the same today?
