    Tick, tock, tick tock.

    The timer hits zero and Romain Grosjean is eliminated in what is the most anticlimactic thing I have seen since the end of Lost. 

    Ninth on the grid for the Frenchman.

  5. ELIMINATED - Verstappen

    Max Verstappen is out of the car and getting weighed at the moment he is officially eliminated. He will start from 10th on the grid.

  6. Right, as Mark Gallagher says, this is where it all gets a bit daft. The session is still counting down but Max Verstappen and Romain Grosjean, the next two in danger, are not bothering going out again.

    Inexplicably, Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas are. They are not in any danger of being eliminated though. Odd.

  7. ELIMINATED - Sainz

    Nico Hulkenberg pulls a 1:31.604 out of the bag and he leaps up to P8!

    Toro Rosso haven't bothered with another lap and as a result Carlos Sainz is eliminated.

  9. ELIMINATED - Vandoorne

    As expected, Stoffel Vandoorne is eliminated. A superb 12th it is. 

    Nico Hulkenberg is in the dangerzone now, but he is on a good lap...

  10. ELIMINATED - Gutierrez

    Esteban Gutierrez lets the clock count down and he is eliminated. He will start from 13th on the grid.

    Stoffel Vandoorne will be eliminated next. He is already out of the McLaren and being congratulated by Jenson Button for securing 12th on the grid.

  11. ELIMINATED - Button

    Ah, big disappointment for Jenson Button. His best effort in Q2 is a 1:31.998 and he is eliminated. That's 14th on the grid for the McLaren but how about this? The former world champion has been out qualified by Stoffel Vandoorne, who currently has the 12th fastest time.

    What a debut from the Belgian!

  12. ELIMINATED - Kvyat

    Disappointing for Red Bull and Daniil Kvyat. The Russian is out at the first hurdle in Q2. Helmut Marko has a face like thunder watching on.

  13. Mercedes-Ferrari-Mercedes-Ferrari after their second run on the super softs. A faultless lap sees Lewis Hamilton into P1 with 1:30.039 - the fastest time we have seen here this weekend.

    Sebastian Vettel is second quickest with, three tenths of a second off Hamilton's time, with Nico Rosberg P4 and Kimi Raikkonen P5. Half a second between the lot of them.

  17. No, the traffic lights are kaput so out pops a chap with a green flag. Old school.

  18. Shenanigans. The clock is counting but the lights are still red at the end of the pit lane.

    A bit of a delay on the battle to get into the top eight then.

  19. Second qualifying starts

    • Lasts for 15 minutes – fastest 15 cars take to the track.
    • After six minutes, the slowest driver is eliminated.
    • Slowest driver is then eliminated every 90 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag. Seven more drivers knocked out.
