Hey, remember when we were all having a chuckle at McLaren and how sad their performances were?

Well, maybe things are on the up?

Jenson Button got progressively better through the practice sessions and finished in P8 this morning.

The Brit was almost two seconds off Lewis Hamilton but, more impressively, out did team-mate Fernando Alonso by around four tenths.

He may not have any world titles, but Nico Rosberg can pull level with F1 great Nelson Piquet today when it comes to pole positions.

Three-time world champion Piquet has 24 poles to his name - Rosberg is sat on 23.

You're going to see plenty of these red-rimmed rubbers today.

The super softs will be in full force as teams try to take advantage of the lack of degradation on the Sochi track.

It also means we could see divers out of the garage for longer and more competition for qualifying places. That's the hope, anyway.

Although, based on FP3, Felipe Massa would get there marginally sooner.

Both of the previous Sochi GPs have been dominated by the Silver Arrows.

Nico Rosberg took pole there in 2015, with Lewis Hamilton on top the previous year.

Although it's the Brit who took victory on both occasions - and is looking for a third consecutive appearance at the top of the podium.

The Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg were neck and neck in final practice and we hope for more of the same in qualifying.

Hamilton was just 0.068 seconds quicker than his team-mate.

    Welcome back race fans.

We're 60 minutes away from Russian Grand Prix qualifying and I feel, deep in my waters, that it's going to be a riot.

Do you feel it too? Or did I just eat my lunch too quickly?

I reckon we could be in for a decent qualifying session - even if it's just a shootout between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton.

Sebastian Vettel showed glimpses in that flying lap too.

We're going to be back at 12:00 BST to build up to quali - but have a read of Andrew Benson's final qualifying report.

Until then - oh it's on like Donkey Kong.

"My money is on Nico Rosberg. I know that will make me very unpopular. I think he has the ability to get his head down and extract more performance from the Mercedes. But you could see Lewis Hamilton was fighting that car and getting everything from it."

With two minutes left. the exciting prospect for qualifying is that these super softs are holding together long enough to give the drivers loads of track time.
