Michael Sayles:, external So that was some start to the Spanish GP. Lewis Hamilton has to take blame for trying to force a way through a nonexistent gap.

Paritosh Singh:, external Rosberg should have given space. Totally his fault.

David Ferguson:, external Hamilton goes on the grass THEN crashed into Rosberg and it's somehow not Hamilton's fault?!

  6. Lap 3/66published at 13:11 British Summer Time 15 May 2016

We must remember that there is still actually a race going and the early headline from that is that it is a Red Bull one-two at the front, Daniel Ricciardo leading from Max Verstappen.

Verstappen is very well placed for a historic podium place, which would make him the youngest driver to achieve that.

Could he even go for the win?

Safety car coming in on this lap.

The two Mercedes are out. The mechanics can't believe it. Lewis Hamilton was holding his head in amazement and it is a disaster for Mercedes - their post-race briefing is going to be very interesting. Nico Rosberg was in front at turn three, but it was a little bit of a misunderstanding. It was very robust from both drivers. Rosberg was moving over to defend the corner - it was two guys going for the same piece of tarmac, but the big loser out of this is Lewis Hamilton.

Mercedes are NOT happy. There's lots of shaking of heads in their garage.

Looking at the replays, Lewis Hamilton was squeezed out by Nico Rosberg as the reigning world champion tried to overtake. He was sent onto the grass, spun and clipped the rear of Rosberg's car.

The safety car is out. What madness! As Lewis Hamilton tried to reclaim first the two collided and were sent flying into the gravel. Unbelievable.

There's going the some very angry faces in the Mercedes garage.

It is difficult to overtake, there is only really the starting straight to do it so in turn one they will be trying to take advantage of any slow starters.

The tyre covers are off and everyone has soft tyres bolted on apart from Rio Haryanto at the back of the grid. He's on mediums.

“So, strategy. The fastest race is a two-stop on soft-medium-medium. To make that work, the first stop will be around lap 12. However, making the medium go the necessary number of laps is not that easy, so some may be forced into a three-stop, either soft-medium-medium-soft, or soft-soft-soft-medium (probably what Haas will do, judging by their tyre allocation), in which case first stops are from lap eight. But not only is this slower than a two-stop, but you have to pass cars as well, and that’s not easy when you need a lap-time advantage of two seconds at least to make a move viable. A pit stop takes about 21 seconds in total and the undercut is worth two seconds. But the timing of that has to be traded against tyre life.”
