Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel (fourth on the grid) says the wet conditions presents an opportunity for him but adds a note of caution.

"For sure, if you are not at the very, very front, these conditions can help you," he says.

"But it is very slippy and very risky. It's very easy to do a small mistake but on the other hand it makes this circuit more exciting in terms of racing and trying to create an overtake."

Among the many drivers pleased to see the wet track on Sunday morning will have been McLaren’s Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button.

They have had a disappointing weekend. The team came to Monaco expecting to beat everyone but the top three teams, but instead Alonso only scraped into the top 10 and Button could not even manage that. Racing director Eric Boullier insisted afterwards that the team are still convinced they have the third best chassis, judging from GPS data, but admitted they had struggled to switch the tyres on this weekend. Despite the car being in the same position as in Spain, maths backs up Boullier’s claim. In percentage terms - which takes out the lap length as a factor - the McLaren-Honda was the closest to the front it has ever been on Saturday.

"Rain, snow, anything that can happen will be help,” Alonso said. He was stunning in the wet in Austin last year; can he perform more miracles today? Button’s not half bad in slippery conditions either...

Unfortunately for Arsenal's Theo Walcott, omitted from England's Euro 2016 squad, this will probably be the biggest sporting event he'll be experiencing this summer...

He's been chatting to (currently injured) Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki...

He's been strolling around Monaco with compatriot Alain Prost.

After his remarkable debut win for Red Bull in Spain two weeks ago, Max Verstappen has come back to earth with a bang - quite literally - this weekend.

He has been outclassed by team-mate Daniel Ricciardo all weekend, and crashed twice on Saturday. He pretty much got away with the first, when he ran wide at Massenet at the top of the hill, suffering only a damaged front wing. But he did the job properly in qualifying, misjudging his entry to Swimming Pool Two, clouting the barrier on the inside, breaking his right-front suspension and being catapulted into the wall on the outside, where he did the rest of the front of the car.

Verstappen held his hands up and admitted his mistake but said he was still optimistic for the race.

  20. Max-imum attack?published at 12:05 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

Max Verstappen is going to be an interesting watch this afternoon. He starts from the pitlane and will be determined to make up for his error in qualifying that caused him to crash out.

He was very racy in Monaco last year, ultimately a bit too racy as he smashed into the rear of Romain Grosjean's Lotus.

One year older and wiser, though...
