And project make-up-lost-time is on for Rosberg as he sets the quickest time of the day.

Yes, it's the only time of the day.

    But you're number one Nico.

Well, the fans that are at Silverstone have not had much bang per Great British pound so far.

Sergio Perez has been doing laps on his tod, and will now be joined by team-mate Nico Hulkenberg, who looks like he's on medium tyres.

    So it's getting drier.

After getting a good soaking on arrival the sun is now trying to poke through the clouds. The weather can't quite decide what sort of day it wants to be and evidently the spectators here were not quite sure what to wear this morning. Some in shorts and others in full waterproofs. Not seen anyone in fancy dress yet, but give it time...

  10. Could Red Bull challenge?published at 10:08 British Summer Time 9 July 2016

There is no doubt that Mercedes are favourites for this weekend, but Red Bull look like they could give them a run for their money on race pace - at least judging by Friday practice. Lewis Hamilton started his first-stint race simulation run on the soft tyres about a second a lap quicker than the Red Bulls, but within a couple of laps Daniel Ricciardo was going at least as fast if not faster and over nine laps there was nothing to choose between them. So even in the dry, the Red Bull could challenge. And if it’s wet, things should be even closer.

As Christian Horner eludes to there (in the non-banter bit) the cars are heading out on slicks. Nico Rosberg will be keen to get out there and make up for lost time.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner: "There's a bit of weather about and Ferrari have bolted on their big engines now so let's see. I think the circuit will dry pretty quickly so I think within 10 minutes everyone will be in slicks."

On Mercedes' drivers colliding: "They should fire both drivers immediately and retire from the world championship."

Classic banter from the big CH there.

The British Grand Prix always provides a stern test for the drivers but strong winds this weekend are making the challenge even more extreme.

“It’s incredibly gusty out there,” Lewis Hamilton said after practice, “which is one of the awesome challenges of this circuit. Coming through Maggotts and Becketts then down through Stowe, I was actually yelling in my helmet, it’s that exciting! What a great combination of corners – particularly when the wind is blowing in the right direction. Today we had a bit of a head wind and it just felt epic through there – one of the most fun rollercoaster rides you can imagine.”

Mercedes look formidable this weekend, which is hardly a surprise. Silverstone is a track that, as Fernando Alonso put it, “needs everything (from a car), because it is very complete”.

And the Mercedes is a car that has everything - the best power unit (even if not by that much any more), the best aerodynamic efficiency overall and great traction. So it was no surprise to see Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg quickest by 0.8 seconds in first practice on Friday and 0.4secs in the afternoon. Rain - if it comes in serious quantities - might bring the others closer, but expect another Hamilton v Rosberg battle for both pole and win.

  20. What happened yesterday?published at 09:52 British Summer Time 9 July 2016

Nico Rosberg may have had problems yesterday, but him and team-mate Lewis Hamilton are clearly the quickest cars out there.

With Rosberg sitting out FP2, Hamilton set the quickest time.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo was second, 0.391 seconds off Hamilton and 0.235secs ahead of team-mate Max Verstappen.
