Who's got a thumb and has been cleared to drive today?

    Marcus Ericsson, that's who.

It's great news, following the Sauber driver's crash yesterday that saw him undergo checks in hospital.

I'm a bit worried about those few leftover screws on the nose of his car though - it's like when you put together a flatpack wardrobe and still have unused mystery items.

Just chuck em away and hope everything stays together.

Daniel Ricciardo has been out-qualified by a team-mate for the first time this season and he was not happy about it, either. The Australian was still smiling and jokey, but admitted to being annoyed (although that was not the word he used…)

“I wanted a perfect record in qualifying,” he said. “Tomorrow I’ll probably just stab someone. He is quicker today but hopefully I can be quicker tomorrow. I think I can be.”

There is clearly some needle between the two, as well. “It has been pretty hectic since Max joined the team,” Ricciardo said. “It created a bit more of an atmosphere in the ream. He’s pushing. I want to keep on top of it.”

Sets the race up nicely with the pair of them on the second row, doesn’t it?

Noel's Stag Party may sound like the sequel to a 1990s TV show but it in fact relates to this colourful lot. I bumped into them as they made their way to the post-qualifying entertainment at Silverstone last night. "Come find us at Luffield on Sunday. We'll be dressed as super heroes again," Noel shouted. I plan to take him up on that, although I suspect they will be a little worse for wear...

The Wimbledon queue gets all the publicity, but what about these guys down at Silverstone?

Plenty of you were up at the crack of dawn to get into the home of British motor racing. The umbrellas suggest it wasn't a pleasant wait.

Move over Glastonbury - this is rock n roll.

There is a perception in Formula 1 that Max Verstappen has out-shone Daniel Ricciardo since they became team-mates at Red Bull in Spain. Actually, that is not the case - until this weekend, Ricciardo had won every qualifying battle, and the only race in which Verstappen had beaten him without the help of circumstances was Austria.

But the Dutchman has been very quick all weekend here and he has now finally done Ricciardo in qualifying.

“In general, I have been a bit unlucky in the last two qualifyings,” Verstappen said, “but in the end the race pace was always very promising and it all went well, so I wasn’t too worried. Today was a really good qualifying, I really enjoyed it.”

From third and fourth on the grid, the Red Bulls could be a pain, judging from their race simulation times on Friday.

In case you were unaware, Lewis Hamilton will have quite a bit of support from the British crowd today.

Expect plenty of noise for Jenson Button too - one of the biggest cheers yesterday came when the McLaren man headed back to his car to take part in Q2 (only to be told he hadn't actually made it through).

Starts have not been Lewis Hamilton’s strong point so far this season, but if he was concerned about the race being settled there, he was not betraying it. “I hope it is decided in my favour at Turn One but it never is,” he said. “It is not easy to overtake here, but the conditions always shift and tyre management is always tough here.”

Nico Rosberg added: “The start will be unusually difficult because it is very low grip and it has not been one of Lewis’s strengths recently. Let’s see from there. The weather, strategies, long race, all to play for.”

On my way into the paddock a little earlier I saw Kimi Raikkonen, programme in hand, waiting for Rio Haryanto's autograph.

It wasn't Kimi, of course, but I reckon he's a spit for the charismatic Finn. This is actually Chris Murphy and Wendy Aldred from Torquay.

"We've got all the drivers' autographs. Rio Haryanto was the last one," said Wendy.

So who are they cheering on this weekend?

"Kimi all the way," says Chris.

    Of course.

It's fitting that Nigel Mansell is checking out Lewis Hamilton's set of wheels.

Hamilton can match Mansell's tally of four British GP victories today.

Only Jim Clark and Alain Prost have won more (five).

Hamilton can also make it three successive wins - only Jim Clark has achieved that, in 1963, 1964 and 1965.
