I've been hurriedly looking for some close-up photos of tyres from P1. This shot of Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull being hauled off the track is as good as I can get.

There's no suggestion that the concern about tyre damage caused Ricciardo's crash into the wall.

Discussions are currently ongoing in the paddock after there were concerns that the new track in Baku was causing damage to the Pirelli tyres each team are given.

That would, of course, be a safety fear. Particularly when you consider the narrow streets around this European GP circuit.

  3. Second practice in doubtpublished at 13:24 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

There is a possibility that we don't have a running of second practice because of fears over tyre degradation.

    Welcome Baku one and all.

    Good pit stop?

I tried to hunt down some plov, a rice-based pilaf dish that is recognised as Azerbaijan's national dish. Instead I had a jacket potato with chilli. No cheese, that costs extra.

Anyway, we could have some urgent news regarding the upcoming session.

Anyhoo. We'll be back at 13:30 BST to build up for a 14:00 BST start in second practice.

In the mean time, feel free to stare at a picture of Lewis Hamilton's dog signing autographs.

That was a session where we probably learned more about the circuit than the cars.

Daniel Ricciardo demonstrated that it's a perilous track.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra: "Max looks like a clutch issue so we're changing the clutch. We want it done properly for session two. You saw what happened with Daniel, it will be a rush to turn the car around for session two. For all the teams it is stretching the spare part with the three street tracks in succession."

    First practice ends

Lewis Hamilton will finish top of first practice with a 1:46.435.

Nico Rosberg in P2 and Valtteri Bottas in P3.

A late quickie from Sebastian Vettel sees him leap from 10th to fifth while the flag is waving - he was on a used pair of softs, so has some juice still to be squeezed.

Let's spy on Fernando Alonso has he puts in a late lap on the softs.

He's up in P4 - 1.5 seconds down on leader Lewis Hamilton - and there's no improvement from the Spaniard.

Daniil Kvyat has a go at Turn 15 in the super softs - easy, easy, steady, steady. You have to come right off the gas there.

    He's right down in 16th.

Lewis Hamilton has his feet up - but remains top of the pile.

Carlos Sainz has pitted but looks like he'll be out again swiftly.

Carlos Sainz doesn't know whether he's coming or going. He looks like he's going to overrun into Turn 15 - the one where Ricciardo came a cropper - but at the last moment decides he can in fact make the corner.

It turns out he can't and he slowly brushes the wall as he regains a positiono n the track.

Daniil Kvyat has gone out on the super softs.

Ferrari, meanwhile, have remained quiet so far - maybe teasing us.

Kimi Raikkonen is P11, Sebastian Vettel P9.

  16. Where are Ferrari right now?published at 11:18 British Summer Time 17 June 2016

What to make of Ferrari’s pace in Montreal, when they were challenging for and arguably threw away victory with a questionable strategic call? Was it a track-specific one-off? Was it a reflection of the pace they have always said they had but had not shown because of a series of messy weekends? Was it down to the upgrades they took to Canada, in particular a new turbine?

Sebastian Vettel said: ‘For sure, upgrades help. Everything we brought to Canada – there was a lot of talk about the turbo update – did make a difference, so that was good. But I think it was just a clean weekend in particular, because the weekends before were a bit messy, in particular in qualifying we weren’t able to show the pace or release the pace of the car, so in this regard Saturday was strong. We qualified where the car belongs and on Sunday we had a trouble-free race. Obviously we were able to put Lewis under a lot of pressure, because simply the speed was there.’

Lewis Hamilton's first practice is done - Mercedes have the car up on the stand for some work. He has a flat spot on a tyre.

We should have action back on the track imminently.

Right. There are no cranes in Baku.

Well, there must be cranes somewhere, how would they build all those fancy buildings?

But there's none in use at the track, so we have to wait for a support vehicle to trundle its way to the stranded Red Bull.

If there's a crash during the race, we could be twiddling our collective thumbs.
