"It’s probably pointless talking about strategy ahead of this race because it is likely to be punctuated by several safety safety cars and virtual safety cars, which will mix things up.

"Under normal circumstances, it would be a straight-forward one-stopper, starting on the super-soft and switching to the soft around lap 22. But no-one expects it to be normal."

  5. Watch out for Bottas and Verstappenpublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Andrew Benson
    Chief F1 writer in Baku

"Row four should be interesting to watch at the start - it comprises Williams’s Valtteri Bottas and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen who are not the best of friends after two identical mix-ups in qualifying.

"In each case, both were trying to start a fast lap and Bottas dived down the inside of Verstappen into Turn One, ruining both of their laps.

"Bottas has been quick all weekend, even if his running was disrupted by missing final practice when his car was damaged by a loose drain cover, and could have been expected to battling for the second row. Verstappen felt third was a given in a clean session."

  9. Baku. Just like Macau?published at 13:25 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Chief F1 writer in Baku

Ask any driver to name their favourite circuit and, if it’s consigned to F1, they’ll talk about the usual suspects - Spa, Suzuka, Monaco.

Widen the net to those they have raced on throughout their career, though, and invariably they will mention Macau. To those without a wide knowledge of motorsport, it’s likely a name they associate only with China, empire and casinos.

But anyone who has been there is in awe of the street track which hosts a prestigious annual Formula Three race around the old Portuguese colony an hour’s ferry ride from Hong Kong.

"To many of the drivers, the new Baku track is as close as ever F1 has got to emulating it. “It reminds me a lot of Macau,” says Daniel Ricciardo. “It is easy to make mistakes, there are a lot of high-speed Esses but there is a massively long straight and you can tow and pass very easily.

"I always said I wish F1 could go to Macau it would be awesome but this may be the next best thing. I am really pleased with what they've done. The race is going to be intense. But that’s what we enjoy.”

  12. Has Hamilton ever driven worse?published at 13:14 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Andrew Benson
    Chief F1 writer in Baku

Lewis Hamilton is a sublime talent with an ability and speed matched by very few drivers in the history of Formula 1. But has he ever driven worse than he did in qualifying here in Azerbaijan?

He was blindingly quick, but almost every lap contained an error. He was locking up here, running wide there and finally he did the job properly but in the oddest of ways, taking off an inside wheel by misjudging his entry to Turn 11.

Hamilton and Mercedes had made some changes overnight, and he said he could not brake in the same places as before but he was not looking for excuses.

“It was nothing to do with anyone else, it was just me not doing good enough,” he said. “I was four tenths up on both laps, so there's no question over whether I was quick enough. If you don't get into a rhythm, you don’t get into a rhythm. It’s very rare I don’t.

Still, he was optimistic for the race, eyeing “big points” as long as he can stay out of trouble and saying “a win is not impossible”.

Having looked imperious in topping the timesheets in all three practice sessions, Lewis Hamilton's qualifying was a scruffy mess.

He twice went wide on at Turn 15, straight on at Turn Seven and then straight on again at Turn 15.

Finally, Hamilton made contact with the inside wall at Turn 11 as team-mate Nico Rosberg took pole.

The final insult came when his car was towed away like a clapped out old banger...

  18. Early issues for Hamilton and Mercedespublished at 12:57 British Summer Time 19 June 2016

    Andrew Benson
    Chief F1 writer in Baku

"Lewis Hamilton’s error-strewn qualifying session had consequences beyond just 10th place on the grid and a broken car.

"He made such a mess of the second session that all his sets of tyres were too badly damaged to be used in the race. Drivers are meant to start on the tyres on which set their fastest time in Q2, but if there is a safety issue they can be changed.

"There were fears that Hamilton had no undamaged tyres but that has turned out not to be the case. Mercedes have swapped the flat-spotted front left from that set with another tyre from a different set."

It was probably fitting that Lewis Hamilton's qualifying session ended next to a set of portaloos.

It really did go down the pan for the world champion.

He crashed in Q3, meaning he'll start 10th on the grid today. It will be well worth watching whether he can haul himself through the pack on a track that is tricky to overtake on, but could see plenty of mistakes and safety cars.

Hamilton was supposed to start the race today on the same tyres he was using during a spin in Q2, which was bad news, because they flat-spotted big time.

But there's some news on that front - here's Andrew Benson to explain.
