A 1:16.490 for Daniel Ricciardo on his first super-soft runs lifts him into P1, but he isn't there for long as Nico Rosberg goes eight tenths quicker.
Nico Hulkenberg moves up to P1 with a 1:16.781 but the front runners are now emerging with super softs on and sure enough it is a brief stay at the top for the Force India as Kimi Raikkonen goes quickest with 1:16.512.
Those super-softs help Rio Haryanto jump up to P8 as he does a 1:18.591.
Meanwhile, fresh from having his front wing tweaked, Nico Hulkenberg joins Haryanto on the track.
Rio Haryanto has decided to pop back out. He's blasting round the circuit on his lonesome with super-softs on his Manor.
Strike one for Lewis Hamilton with regards to exceeding track limits at Turn 1.
"Lewis short cut detection, track limits at Turn 1," he is told.
He's much more careful on his next lap and asks: "Track limits OK there?"
"Yes Lewis, no problems."
Everyone's done at least one timed lap now and it's quiet on the track as the everyone pits with 20 minutes gone.
...and the Briton goes fastest of all with 1:17.067. That's three tenths quicker than Nico Rosberg.
Daniel Ricciardo improves but it is not enough to prevent Nico Rosberg from leaping into first place as the Mercedes man does a 1:17.415.
Lewis Hamilton, though is purple through the first two sectors...
Changes at the top as Red Bull go one-two, with Daniel Ricciardo leading Max Verstappen by two tenths of a second after a 1:17.716. Nico Rosberg is third quickest, six tenths of a second slower than Ricciardo.
Oof! A hairy moment for a photographer down at the Mercedes garage.
There's a group of them waiting to snap a picture of Lewis Hamilton as he emerges, but one photographer finds himself a little too close to comfort to the Mercedes and falls back to get out of the way. No contact, although the photographer might have a sore bum after tumbling backwards.
Meanwhile, plenty of cars out on the track now as Nico Hulkenberg goes quickest with a 1:18.363. Soft tyres across the board.
A moment for Nico Hulkenberg as he runs wide coming out of Turn One and is ever-so-briefly airborne.
Sergio Perez runs wide at the same corner soon after and it seems that enough is enough for the powers that be as Kimi Raikkonen is told over the radio: "Information from race control, they are going to be more strict with track limits so we need to respect them at Turn One."
There's plenty of fluffy clouds above the circuit, but none that look particularly threatening. We should be in for another dry session.
Rio Haryanto kicks things off with a 1:25.806 but Sebastian Vettel is the first to post a more representative time with a 1:18.433. Kimi Raikkonen goes second quickest, 0.06s slower than his Ferrari team-mate.

On this day 26 years ago, Ayrton Senna won the German Grand Prix at Hockenheimring.
Victory put Senna back into the championship lead, four points ahead of Alain Prost.
Will Nico Rosberg do likewise and secure a win that would put him back on top of the drivers' championship?
