Lewis Hamilton, with 49 career victories, is third in the all-time list behind Michael Schumacher (91) and Alain Prost (51).

He's going to need to either produce the drive of his season, or have a big slice of fortune, if he is to claim his 50th win tomorrow.

Andrew Ebling: That looked a lot like a proper pole from Rosberg. As opposed to lucking out. Again.

Sebastian Vettel won the Singapore GP in 2015, but Lewis Hamilton went on to win the title. That's the only time in the previous five years that the Singapore GP winner has not won the drivers' championship

Nico Rosberg has a real chance to reclaim the lead in the championship tomorrow and here is a statistic that will give him further encouragement.

The winner of the Singapore Grand Prix has gone on to take the drivers' title in four of the previous five years.

Different tyre strategies at the front of the grid as Nico Rosberg will start on the ultrasofts while Daniel Ricciardo will be on supersofts, meaning he will be able to go further into the race than the two Mercedes.

Asked if he was worried, Rosberg said: "Worried? No, but I will be keeping an eye on him for sure. He will be a threat for sure, especially with that supersoft tyre."

A good fillip for Daniil Kvyat to be up in seventh, but he is still 0.272secs off Sainz. Unlikely to be convincing enough for Marko in itself.

Nico Rosberg moves up to eighth on the all-time list of career pole positions - level with Juan Manuel Fangio.

  9. Not a great weekend so far for Hamiltonpublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 17 September 2016

Lewis Hamilton, who finished third in qualifying: "It hasn't been my weekend so far.

"Nico did a great job. He showed the true potential of the car and I will do as good as I can to get at least one step up."

Daniel Ricciardo, who qualified second: “I am pleased enough – the aim was to be in on the front row, we knew it would be tough to get in front of the Mercedes, but it was nice to be in front of at least one of them.

“We made improvements through qualifying and, in practice we were still trying to find stuff in the car, and it finally came good in qualifying. The rhythm throughout the session was good.

"We qualified on the supersofts, and we will start the race on that tyre. We will see if that makes a difference. The last lap in Q3 was clean, probably not as good as Nico’s, but good enough to get on the front row.”

That's Nico Rosberg's first pole position in Singapore in the 200th grand prix of his career. As the man says himself, definitely one of his best.

  13. 'I gave it everything'published at 15:26 British Summer Time 17 September 2016

Nico Rosberg, who secured pole position: "I am definitely happy with that one. It was one of my top three laps ever. It wasn't clear in qualifying how we would stack up against Red Bull so I really had to give it everything and pull it out of the bag, which is cool."

Just like he did last year, Nico Rosberg appears to be finishing the season in great form. Two wins from his last two races and he is in the perfect position to claim victory tomorrow.

Just two points separate championship leader Lewis Hamilton and Rosberg and with Sebastian Vettel starting right at the back of the grid, the stage is set for an absolute cracker.

Hamilton lost a lot of time in the middle sector. He made an error on turn two and missed the apex on turn three, while Daniel Ricciardo put together the best lap he possibly could. Hamilton will need the start of his life tomorrow, and that may be asking too much of him.
