Matthew Phillips: Max hasn't forced another car off the track. Some of his moves have been v late. But its always the same move to the inside

Kimi Raikkonen, on super-softs, goes into P2 ahead of Verstappen.

Nico Rosberg, om softs, looks like he's going well until Verstappen gets in his way - a mistake from the Dutchman who was in a world of his own.

Rosberg waves an angry hand as he goes past, like a frustrated rush-hour driver.

And Daniel Ricciardo's not putting boots on caterpillars, immediately going quickest with 1:23.7 on super-soft tyres.

Team-mate Max Verstappen, on the slightly slower soft tyres, goes 0.3secs slower.

  8. McLaren eyeing Q3published at 10:18 British Summer Time 3 September 2016

Fernando Alonso described his effort on the qualifying simulations on Friday as “a good lap”, and he wasn’t joking - it put him seventh fastest, only 1.4secs off the pace. Not bad on a circuit with so few corners and a power deficit estimated at around 80bhp.

Team-mate Jenson Button was 10th, despite being delayed a little when Kimi Raikkonen aborted his lap in front of him. And McLaren were in the unexpected position of having both cars in the top 10.

But Alonso said he still did not expect that come qualifying, once the Ferrari and Mercedes teams use the qualifying engine modes that Honda don’t have.

“We need to look at all the things,” he said.

“We tested a few interesting things between the two cars we need to evaluate for the future. Reasonably happy with the performance. We did not expect to be both cars in the top 10 here in Monza. But we need to keep the feet on the ground because we know in qualifying we slip a little bit backwards. So hopefully we can be close to Q3 but if we are in Q3 that will be a surprise because we don’t expect to do so.”

"I'm stuck in the gravel," he said on the radio after going off.

He tries a bit of wheel spin but just sprays gravel like confetti - the Haas has been hoisted in the air and is being carried off by the neon green crane. It must be glow in the dark that crane.

Virtual safety car is still on.

Romain Grosjean loses control of his Haas in the Ascari chicane and skids into the gravel.

He's properly stuck in there and won;t be moving anywhere anytime soon.

The Frenchman trundles off as a little green crane blusters over to fulfill its duties.

Laurence Vines: Whether he tones it down or not I think he should be treated the same way as all the drivers. When Rosberg forced Verstappen off track he got a penalty. When Verstappen forced Raikkonen off track he wasn't even under investigation.

(((Rebooted))): Is he breaking any F1 rules? If not, let him drive his way. Imagine trying to stifle Ayrton Senna.

TWidN8: Try not to make a fuss about nothing.. He didn't get any investigation by Stewards, Drivers didn't talk about it in meeting.

Sebastian Vettel said upon his arrival here that Ferrari needed a good weekend, and so far it looks like they are going to get one. They are still some way behind Mercedes but their final engine upgrade of the season appears to have played its part in moving them clear of Red Bull - Vettel was the best part of 0.5secs clear of Max Verstappen in fifth.

“We've had a good run of podiums,” Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo said after second practice. “To keep that run going here is not unlikely but it's less likely maybe. Today showed we are still a bit off the podium positions. Ferrari had a good buffer on us. We can get more out of the super-soft, which will help, but it's still a big margin. Ferrari had a bit more of a gap than we probably expected. The gap was significant enough that they would need to make a few mistakes and we'd need to make tomorrow perfect to get them.”
