Summary

  • Rosberg wins, Verstappen 2nd, Hamilton 3rd

  • Mercedes win constructors' title

  • Hamilton fell back to 8th after terrible start

  1. 'See ya later'published at 06:41 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

Nico Hulkenberg passes Valtteri Bottas and delivers a jaunty a "see ya later"' over the team radio.

As Mark Gallagher dryly observes, it should be obligatory for drivers to make some cutting comment over the radio after completing a move.

  2. One-stop shoppublished at 06:40 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

So the strategies now are fairly clear. Two stops in the main, but there's half a dozen one-stoppers out there.

The Williams cars of Bottas and Massa are the first of them in ninth and 10th, then it's Palmer's Renault in 11th - another good drive by the Briton.

Palmer's team-mate Magnussen and the two Saubers are the others trying to one-stop.

  3. Gaps at the frontpublished at 06:37 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

So, lots of activity on the track but we seem to be settling down again.

A look a the gaps at the front shows Rosberg leading from just under four seconds from Verstappen, then it's three seconds back to Vettel who has 12 in hand on Hamilton.

For those wondering if Hamilton can still win this thing, he's around 20 seconds down on his team-mate.

If it finishes like this Rosberg will lead the championship by 36 points.*

*On-the-hoof maths. Apologies if it's wrong

  5. 'Lewis more energised'published at 06:33 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

    Tom Clarkson
    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

Lewis Hamilton's car is much happier on these hard tyres. You can tell from the way he is positioning his car on the track that he feels more energised on this hard compound.

He is a driver who loves being on the attack and making places.

  6. 'Rewarding strategy'published at 06:30 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

    Mark Gallagher
BBC Radio 5 live Formula 1 analyst

Huge frustration for Kimi Raikkonen and Sergio Perez. They were held up on that lap and Lewis Hamilton took advantage.

That's been two laps which have transformed his position in the race. A very rewarding strategy. He was biding his time on his tyres and the result is he has gained three positions.

  7. Hamilton on a chargepublished at 06:30 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

After stealing that march at the pit stop, Hamilton swiftly dispatches Ricciardo - who has stopped - and the Williamses of Massa and Bottas - who haven't.

He's up to fourth place now, behind leader Rosberg, Verstappen and Vettel.

  8. Hamilton benefits from Palmer trainpublished at 06:28 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

All fun and games behind the Renault of Jolyon Palmer there.

Daniel Ricciardo had trouble passing Palmer for eighth at the hairpin and ran off the track, but recovered and got the job done.

Then it was the turn of Perez and Raikkonen to get stuck behind the yet-to-stop Palmer, and neither man could do it.

The time they lost played beautifully into the hands of Hamilton, who took his pit stop but was able to emerge ahead of both.

  9. Rosberg inpublished at 06:25 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

So, lap 13 and leader Nico Rosberg is into the pit.

No dramas and the Mercedes man is released into some free air.

Vettel, Perez and Raikkonen all pit too so Rosberg resumes in second place behind new leader Hamilton, who is yet to pit.

  10. Pit stops startpublished at 06:22 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

So Ricciardo is into the pits, but before him second-placed team-mate Verstappen also came in.

A double service for the Red Bull team but it wasn't a problem. Both cars serviced and on their way again on the hard tyres.

  11. Raikkonen getting racypublished at 06:20 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

Raikkonen really hasn't been fazed up by that little off.

He's all over the back of Ricciardo.

The Finn was just lining up a move on the Red Bull man but Ricciardo elects to pit. On lap 11.

  12. Radio chatpublished at 06:19 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

Lewis Hamilton's engineer has been on the radio to give him some motivational news.

"Other cars are struggling on their tyres," they tell the Briton. "You just have to keep these tyres alive for as long as possible."

  13. Raikkonen off through Degnerspublished at 06:18 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

A lurid moment for Raikkonen's Ferrari through the Degner curves. The Finn, in sixth place, ran wide, bounced over the grass but gathered it up.

Hamilton running behind will be helped by that.

  14. 'Seat of your pants moment'published at 06:16 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

    Mark Gallagher
BBC Radio 5 live Formula 1 analyst

Lewis Hamilton's move past Nico Hulkenberg was a seat of your pants moment.

Lewis really needed to get past him and he has to start picking off the people in front of him but it is going to get progressively more difficult.

Benedict Salido: Are the conspiracy theorists gonna blame the start again on Mercedes? "Greatest driver" eh? Lost 6 places in 50 meters AGAIN. Lol

Jeremiah Kariuki: It can get worse for Lewis! That could be the worst movement ever for him. But he is a fighter. Expect a fight from the back.

  16. Hamilton fighting backpublished at 06:15 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

Hamilton and Hulkenberg getting very spicy through 130R. The Briton had a little nibble at the back of the Force India but the door was firmly shut.

Hamilton regrouped, settled in behind through the chicane and then got the pass done at the end of the start-finish straight.

Seventh place now for the Mercedes man.

  17. 'Difficult race for Hamilton'published at 06:13 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

    Tom Clarkson
    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

Lewis Hamilton has got a difficult race now because strategically there not many options here.

Almost more important than your tyre here is track position.

  18. Wheelspin to blame?published at 06:11 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

We're watching replays of the start and it really is an odd one for Hamilton. Lots of wheelspin and the car was simply abysmal off the line.

Daniel Ricciardo behind did very well to avoid ploughing straight into the back of him.

  19. 'Sorry guys'published at 06:10 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

We've just heard Hamilton over the radio after that terrible start.

He tells his team: "Sorry guys."

"Don't stress Lewis," is the response.

Perhaps that mistake was all Hamilton and not the damp circuit?

  20. Lap three - top sixpublished at 06:09 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

So we have Rosberg out in front after a steady start, next up is the Red Bull of Max Verstappen. The flying Vettel is third from Perez, then it's Ricciardo and the second Force India of Nico Hulkenberg.
