It's all about the battle at the front. The only other tussle of interest is between Fernando Alonso and Daniil Kvyat. The McLaren, currently 12th, is half a second ahead of the Toro Rosso.

Marcus Ericsson, running last, pulls over to the side.

"My gearbox is broken," he says.

"Oh! What's going on," is the somewhat surprised reply.

    The Sauber is done.

The reality is Hamilton is not giving up but one suspects that five second time penalty will decide this race - to be honest, it may have ruined the race...

"It is all going to happen at the end, keep it up mate," Lewis Hamilton is told over team radio.

The gap is down to 9.3 seconds as Sebastian Vettel picks his way past the backmarkers.

Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene  can't take the tension. He's gone out of the garage for a bit of fresh air.

    What a race.

Based on their current pace, I don't think Bottas will be getting any team orders to let Hamilton through any time soon - I think Hamilton will just breeze straight past him in a few laps time.

Bottas' performance has been nowhere near good enough to challenge for the race despite his pole position this weekend.

  12. Postpublished at Lap 45/57

Lewis Hamilton is closing in on Valtteri Bottas with 2.7 seconds between them now. Get past his team-mate and he should be right on Sebastian Vettel's tail going into the final few laps.

Hold on tight, this could be a tense finish!

"Why are we going for this tyre?" asks Lewis Hamilton, as he questions why softs were put on rather than super-softs. "It is based on data," Mercedes assure him.

Yes, Hamilton is coming in again - for softs. He's told he'll need to overtake Bottas on track

It's been pretty cataclysmic weekend for Honda hasn't it. There is plenty of head scratching going on up and down the pit lane as to how they have managed to get it so wrong.

I'm sure Fernando Alonso can't wait to get to Indianapolis.
