After popping off to play tennis when his McLaren decided not to play ball in first practice, Fernando Alonso managed the full hour of final practice this morning, even squeezing in the 10th quickest time.

Promising ahead of qualifying? How the home fans would love to see a decent showing from Alonso this afternoon.

Ferrari are the most successful team at the Circuit de Catalunya with eight wins in 26 years.

Their first was in 1996, Michael Schumacher's win, and their last was in 2013 when Fernando Alonso triumphed for them.

Incidentally, that was also Alonso's last win in F1.

There was a frantic scrabble in the Mercedes garage this morning to get Valtteri Bottas out and now there's a race against time at Ferrari to ensure Sebastian Vettel is ready for qualifying.

Just over half an hour to go until qualifying starts...

As a rule of thumb, if you don't get pole position in Spain, you can be pretty sure you ain't gonna win.

All but three of the last 16 Spanish Grands Prix have been won from pole. The only drivers to win in Barcelona without starting on the front row are Michael Schumacher (from third on the grid in 1996), Fernando Alonso (from fifth in 2013) and Max Verstappen (fourth in 2016).

We should be in for a good qualifying. It is up in the air regarding which of four drivers will be on pole.

  11. Changes to qualifyingpublished at 12:18 British Summer Time 13 May 2017

There's been some changes to the qualifying format. DON'T WORRY, we're not going back to the elimination-style qualify from the start of last season, this instead concerns what happens after qualifying.

Basically, the top three drivers will be interviewed on the grid in front of the main grandstand straight after the qualifying finishes in an effort to try and capture the energy and emotion of the drivers.

It hasn't been completely smooth sailing for Mercedes and Ferrari this weekend.

Valtteri Bottas managed just eight minutes in final practice after his team found a water leak in his W08 while Sebastian Vettel came to a stop just before the end of the session because of a problem.

Ferrari later confirmed they had to replace some parts in Vettel's engine as a precaution.

It has been an interesting day for Ferrari so far. They made some changes that appear to be working. I still think Mercedes are the team to beat but Ferrari will run them close.

Hello! Welcome along to our coverage of qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix.

It looked like major upgrades for Mercedes had propelled them out of their rivals' reach in Friday practice but Ferrari suggested the gap might not be as big as feared after Kimi Raikkonen finished fastest in final practice, almost four tenths quicker than Lewis Hamilton.

Mercedes, though, are sure to have more in hand for qualifying... but just how much more?

  17. The Iceman's time again?published at 12:00 British Summer Time 13 May 2017

Admittedly I've only had a quick scan of Google but a search suggests not a great deal happened in 2008.

Spain won Euro 2008, Liverpool became the European Capital of Culture and Flo Rida feat. T-Pain had the longest-running number one single with Low (apparently).

But there was one moment that was particularly significant for us Formula 1 and, more specifically, Kimi Raikkonen fans.

The Finn took pole position for the France Grand Prix. He hasn't managed it since. Is today to be the day he ends his long, long wait?

A quick wrap up of the session before I bob off for a break. Ferrari top practice for the first time this weekend with Kimi Raikkonen fastest.

Lewis Hamilton was third quickest, almost four tenths off Raikkonen's pace while Valtteri Bottas was fourth after managing just eight minutes following an engine change.
