Red Bull are up and running as 2016 Spanish Grand Prix winner Max Verstappen goes third quickest thanks to a 1:23.219 on mediums. Daniel Ricciardo is P6, half a second off his team-mate's time.

Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso finally posts a much more representative time as a 1:24.680  on mediums puts him 11th.

Fernando Alonso has been taking it easy so far. He's dead last on the timing sheet following a 1:29.225. That's around five seconds slower than his McLaren team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne, who is P12.

Just three drivers left to do a timed lap. They are Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen for Red Bull and Valtteri Bottas, who does not look anywhere close to be heading out soon. His car is still up on the stands.

Lewis Hamilton has popped on some mediums and is on a quick lap now. Not quick enough to usurp Kimi Raikkonen from P1 as the Briton goes second following a 1:22.779.

He's fastest of all through the first sector on his next run, so top spot might be his soon...

Here comes the Ferraris. Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel are on mediums and they immediately go first and second respectively.

Raikkonen does a 1:22.409 with Vettel doing 1:23.406.

No time yet from Lewis Hamilton, who has completed two laps on hard tyres, while Valtteri Bottas is still nowhere to be seen as Mercedes work on fixing his car.

Red Bull have had a disappointing start to the season but had targeted this race, and the inevitable aerodynamic upgrade, to start their fight back towards the front.

So far, it is going well, with the team only 0.6secs off the pace - about half the deficit of the first four races.

“A little bit happier,” said Max Verstappen, fifth fastest on Friday, “but we still need to work very hard to get more pace in the car and the engine. We made a good step forward, we are a little bit closer to Ferrari. But I think Mercedes, as well, brought a very good update package, so they are still ahead.”

  18. 'Somebody else was steering my ship'published at 10:09 British Summer Time 13 May 2017

The headline lap times did not look great for Ferrari on Friday - the red cars were about 0.3secs off their silver rivals. However, it was obvious that there was more time in the Ferrari, as Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen both made errors on their laps, and if you took their best sectors, they were, as Lewis Hamilton said, about 0.1secs away. However, the race runs told a different story. There, Hamilton was 0.1secs quicker than Valtteri Bottas on average and a massive 0.7secs quicker than Vettel. The German admitted that Friday “was a shocker if you look at the long runs”. But he added: “I was struggling a bit to find the rhythm, with the conditions, probably more myself than the car. I didn’t get everything together but I can feel the car is quick so that’s good. I am not worried. I am just not happy with the day went. I wasn't always feeling as if I was captain on board. Sometimes somebody else was steering my ship but I hope tomorrow whoever that was will disappear.”

Quick, get your camera phone out and snap a picture of the timing board because Fernando Alonso has gone quickest!

Admittedly, he's the first and only driver to set a time so far, a 1:29.225, but it is good to see the great man up there.
