It was always a risk. That one minute sitting in the weighbridge as he checked the weight of the car meant he was late going out.

This is Monaco. It can always happen.

Too much faffing about by Lewis Hamilton? He left it late to get a banker in, opening him up for a crash to knock him out. He may have been struggling with the balance of his Mercedes but surely would have had enough to get through.

Misfortune for one McLaren, but great news for the other as Jenson Button is into the top 10 shootout!

A shame about his 15-place grid penalty but great for Button nevertheless.

Just what Lewis Hamilton did not want.

Stoffel Vandoorne is into the barrier, the yellow flags are waved and everyone has to abort their laps meaning Hamilton goes out.

The Briton shakes his head. "That's me out, right?"

    "Yep, sorry Lewis."

Kimi Raikkonen produces a lap time Lewis Hamilton, at the moment, can only dream of as he does a 1:12.231 to strengthen his place at the top of the timesheet.

Sebastian Vettel improves to go P2, two tenths of a second behind his team-mate.

Meanwhile, silence in the Mercedes garage. Lewis Hamilton is attacking.

"We need to get all these laps in," Hamilton is told.

Lewis Hamilton is sent back out.

IF he gets a clear run, he has the pace to get into Q3 - no doubt - but anything that could bring out the yellow flags will ruin his attempt and could see him out.

    Unthinkable, surely?
