Out on the track in Monaco, the cars are noticeably more spectacular this year than last. The daunting first Swimming Pool section is now flat-out - from the apex of Tabac, the next braking is into the second Swimming Pool chicane, where drivers kiss the inside barrier with their inside front wheel. At Rascasse, a picture of the qualities of cars emerges. The Ferrari looks very drivable and fast. The Mercedes pivots nicely mid-corner, but has a little too much wheel spin on exit. The Toro Rosso’s behaviour confirms their status as dark horses for a good result, and Stoffel Vandoorne in the McLaren, whose Honda engine still sounds mechanical and clattery, looks better than he has all year so far.
