  1. Fifth for Fernando Alonsopublished at 16:28 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

But we're all here for the man of the moment - Fernando Alonso. He impressed by getting through to Fast Nine in qualifying and then securing fifth for today's race. That means he will start from the middle of the second row.

Alexander Rossi won last year's race from 11th on the grid, meaning Alonso stands a very good chance of winning from his position.

Pole position was decided in last week's qualifying, which takes place over two days.

The first day sees drivers battling to get into the Fast Nine - the nine fastest drivers who battle for pole position.

The second day then sees those nine drivers do four laps and their average pace it was determines pole.

New Zealand’s Scott Dixon secured pole position last week with a speed of 232.164 miles per hour but, like F1 qualifying, we won't see speeds like that on race day today. Alexander Rossi won last year with an average speed of 166.634 mph.

  3. 'It is all about Fernando'published at 16:21 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

If Fernando Alonso expected an inconspicuous arrival, he was mistaken.

Alonso mania in America has well and truly arrived.

"Fernando Alonso at Indy 500 is huge here," says Eric Smith, lead IndyCar writer for Race Review Online.

"On every TV and radio show it is all about Fernando. The other drivers keep calling themselves 'the other 32' and keep making references to the fact that if no-one asks them a Fernando Alonso-related question in press conferences, it's a big surprise."

  5. How long is the circuit?published at 16:12 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval is 2.5 miles long.

The drivers drive a total of 500 miles, which is what the race takes its name from, meaning they will lap the track 200 times.

  6. What time does it start?published at 16:07 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

The Indy 500 gets under way at 17:19 BST and will last for just around three hours. Alexander Rossi won it last year in three hours and two minutes so chances are you are going to want to put Antiques Road Show on record...

Right then. It's pretty much time to switch focus from 20 F1 drivers to just one because it's almost Fernando Alonso time.

  10. 'I trust them'published at 15:52 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

Kimi Raikkonen not only missed out on victory but also becoming the first Finn to win 21 races in Formula 1.

That tasks looks even more difficult if, as paddock rumours suggest, Sebastian Vettel is the contractual number one at Ferrari.

"If you have no confidence in your team it gets really complicated," Raikkonen says. "As a driver I can also stop the car but I trust them."

  11. 'The gap is big but not impossible to close'published at 15:43 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

Going from 13th to seventh is pretty much the best Lewis Hamilton could have done.

Here's what he had to say: "I feel good. I feel very positive. I am very happy.

"I came in to this race a lot further back and had no idea what was going to happen.

"The beginning of the race was boring but when I got some clear air, it was fun.

"The team said in the strategy meeting this morning I could only get 10th so I am happy.

"The gap to Vettel is big but not impossible to close. This has been the most difficult weekend I have had a while. I just have to let my guys know we are not going to give up.

"25 points is a long way but I am going to work as hard as I can to make sure a weekend like this is not repeated."

  13. 'Not whetted the appetite'published at 15:34 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

Jenson Button, who retired from the race: "You never like seeing a car tip over because you don't know if the driver's head is alright so he most important thing is he is okay. I have just seen him and he seems alright.

"I enjoyed qualifying and I enjoyed some laps today. I never wanted to damage the car. Sorry to the team for doing that but when you see an opening, you take it.

"It has not whetted the appetite for anymore - definitely not."

  14. Postpublished at 15:33 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

Jenson Button went all Robot Wars on Pascal Wehrlein's car, scooping it up onto its side and nudging it into the barriers.

Add to that a day of collecting grid penalties on Saturday and it's not been a great return to F1 all-in-all.

Third placed Daniel Ricciardo: "Happier today for sure. Yesterday, we had so much to offer but we got our chance today. I had the track to myself for a few laps.

"Yeh didn't enjoy the clip of the barrier. I wasnt sure if i damaged anything. When you get safety car, these tyres are like driving on ice."

  18. 'A special win'published at 15:11 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

Race winner Sebastian Vettel: "Unbelievable - it was such an intense race. I was hoping to have a better launch. Kimi had a really good start but I had to be patient.

"I went through a really tricky phase with some tricky tyres - they started to slide but had a second chance after the pit.

"I got a couple of really good laps where I could control the pace and I was able to use the safety car. This circuit is tricky with cold tyres.

"We couldn't plan much but the plan was to pull away and as soon as the gap opened I took it. I was surprised myself.

"It is very special to win here. We will have a fun night and we have enough time to prepare for Canada."
