F1 journalist Dan Knutson in Barcelona: Jolyon Palmer did just 15 laps this morning in the Renault.

“The programme is to do a lot of laps, and we didn’t really do many laps,” he said when he talked to the media during the lunch break. “We were deviated pretty early. We had an engine change as a precaution.”

By contrast, Felipe Massa did 67 laps and Sebastian Vettel did 82 laps.

“We are always learning and making big improvements, so every time I get in the car it is really enjoyable,” Palmer said.

“To get cut short early today was a bit annoying, but even then it is still enjoyable to see Nico [Hulkenberg] finding gains for the team. We have only done four-and-a-half days with this car, so every time we hit the track we are learning something, and hopefully we can keep that going this afternoon.”

  16. Engine change for McLarenpublished at 12:12 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2017

Over in the McLaren-Honda pit, it’s looking very much like Groundhog Day. Stoffel Vandoorne has done 34 laps this morning but the Belgian had not been out for a while before the lunch break. Now we know why. Honda is changing the engine after a problem was discovered this morning. That’s at least six engines the Japanese company has got through in testing so far - and that’s just the number you get to when you count up the changes they will admit to; it might even be one more than that. It is really not looking good for that team this season.

    Lunchtime!

Felipe Massa ends the morning quickest, doing a 1:19.726 on supersofts. Daniel Ricciardo, on ultrasofts, is second quickest with 1:19.900.

Lewis Hamilton completes the top three after doing 1:20.456 on softs earlier in the morning.

Daniel Ricciardo sneaks in a run of the ultrasofts just before lunch and subsequently improves, joining Felipe Massa in breaking the 1:20 barrier. He does a 1:19.900, not quite enough to beat Massa.
