Straight in with times as Daniil Kvyat sets the early pace with a 1:46.868. He left it until about a minute before the end of first practice to set his first time in that session, so straight on it in second practice.

Jolyon Palmer, Kevin Magnussen, Daniel Kvyat and Romain Grosjean are all out on the track. All have the soft compound of tyre bolted on their cars.

How long do we reckon it will be before Grosjean complains about his brakes?

  10. Who's going where?published at 13:54 British Summer Time 23 June 2017

The driver market is beginning to become a focus of attention, as always in early summer, and the main initial focus is on the potential vacancies at Mercedes and Ferrari, with the contracts of Valtteri Bottas, Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen all up for renewal. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said in the week that he sympathised with Bottas’ “uncomfortable” situation. But the Finn played it down. “I feel normal - because every single year in Formula 1 for me I’ve had the same situation,” he said. “I’ve had no idea at this point what’s going to be next year.”

Vettel said he was happy at Ferrari and hoped they could continue for some time to come, but stopped short of saying he would re-sign. Meanwhile, the elephant in the corner is Fernando Alonso, who is also out of contract at the end of the season, and wants a winning car.

"There are some movements out there,” he said. “I know there are even more movements than probably we all know and there are some teams we think are set for next year, (but) I don't think it's so clear that they are 100% confirmed. So I think there will be a lot of changes for next year. I will try to stay calm and pick up the best decision for next year. I just want to win. We’ll see what happens.”

Firstly, the word 'Checo' shaved into his head looks nothing like the word 'checo' and secondly, his number one driver crashed out in first practice.

Max Verstappen led a Red Bull one-two in a disjointed and unrepresentative first practice session as the title contenders, Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, were third and fifth, not setting times on the quickest tyre.

Vettel's lap time on softs (1:44.967) effectively made him the de facto quickest in the session but the Red Bulls were surprisingly quick on a power track where they are not expecting to do well. Hamilton also set his best time on the soft tyre and was just over half a second slower than Vettel.

The initial auguries are not that encouraging for Mercedes, who struggled in Russia in April on a track with many similarities to the Baku street circuit, but the session was not conclusive enough to be certain of what the times meant.

Hello! Welcome along to our coverage of second practice for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Yep, Sergio Perez scuppered a promising display for Force India in first practice by misjudging a corner and slamming his front right tyre into a wall.

It was about the only drama of an otherwise uneventful session, although Mercedes did raise an eyebrow as Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas finished fifth and sixth fastest respectively.

Instead, the morning belonged to Red Bull as Max Verstappen topped the timesheet ahead of team-mate Daniel Ricciardo.

... well, not quite, but you can certainly end up in it as Sergio Perez found out in first practice...

As Allan McNish says, it's far too early to make any rash judgements about Mercedes' performance.

It's going to be a busy couple of hours for the Force India crew as they look to patch up Sergio Perez's car in time for second practice.

That gets under way at 14:00 BST but for a bit of lunchtime reading, check out Andrew Benson's take on first practice here.

    See you in a bit.
