I will wait until FP2 to see Mercedes' quali sim run and also their long run. I will reserve my judgement until this afternoon.

Mercedes only fifth and sixth, a cause for concern? Neither Lewis Hamilton or Valtteri Bottas managed to hook it up throughout that session, traffic scuppering their attempts to put in a time to trouble the Red Bulls.

One minute left and it looks like this session is going to end with a Red Bull one-two. Max Verstappen has the quickest time, with Daniel Ricciardo P2, four tenths down on his team-mate.

"The brakes are not braking," complains Romain Grosjean.

"OK, understood," is the reply. Did I sense a bit of exasperation in his race engineer's voice?

It's not been the most profitable of sessions for Toro Rosso. Daniil Kvyat hasn't done a timed lap yet - the only driver who hasn't - and has also managed just eight laps. Carlos Sainz has managed just two laps more than his team-mate.

Sergio Perez's Force India has successfully been removed from the track, the debris has been swept up and the session is go again with five minutes left on the clock.

Marshals, wisely, abandon trying to squeeze the Force India through that narrow archway and instead locate a wider road to take it down.

Sergio Perez, by the way, is OK. He's out of the car and puffs out his cheeks in frustration as he watches marshals attempt to wheel the wrecked Force India through an archway in the castle wall.

Looks like Sergio Perez got caught out by the tight and twisty corners and ran wide into the corner and slammed into the barrier on the approach the castle wall. His right front tyre goes bouncing off down the road.

The red flag is waved. Plenty of debris from that shunt and it's going to take a bit of time to clean that up.

Sergio Perez is into the wall!

It's deja vu for the Force India driver. He crashed in practice last year and has done it again this year.

Force India continue their impressive showing here as Esteban Ocon does what Lewis Hamilton cannot - find a bit of clear air to go second quickest on the super-softs.

Still can't get close to that stonking lap by Max Verstappen. The Force India is almost a second down on the Red Bull.
