Chief F1 writer at SilverstoneFerrari did not have the greatest of days on Friday and Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo spies an opportunity. “Mercedes were rapid today, and normally they are quicker in qualifying so we will let them do their thing at the moment,” said Ricciardo, whose subsequently learned he must take a five-place grid penalty after a gearbox change.
“But I think on one-lap pace we can get Ferrari and that will translate to higher fuel running. I know the feeling with the car is not where it can be, so for sure there is lap time on the table.”
Sebastian Vettel said: “Today was a bit up an down for us but it is fun to drive around here. The car was not so good to start to with but it got better towards the end, a lot things we need to look at and improve and string the balance together but it is a bit of both and a bit too slippery. Mercedes looks quick but that is not a surprise.”

Chief F1 writer at SilverstoneLewis Hamilton’s path to winning this grand prix - which he must do - was eased on Friday when Mercedes revealed team-mate Valtteri Bottas would have a five-place grid penalty for an unauthorised gearbox change.
The issue is the same as hit Hamilton in Austria last weekend. Bottas was quickest in both practice sessions on Friday - although the impression was that Hamilton would have been had he not lost control at Becketts on his run on the super-soft tyres.

Chief F1 writer at SilverstoneMercedes have looked very quick so far this weekend - as was to be expected at this track of straights and long corners. Lewis Hamilton said: “It felt fantastic today. This car is so fast. it is impossible for you to imagine what it’s like in our car. it is spectacular. Stowe, just tap the brakes a little bit then back on the power, it is like you are on rails.”

BBC Sport at SilverstonePlenty of people appear to have been caught out by the decent weather at Silverstone on Friday. Lots of shorts and t-shirts on show around the circuit this morning but it is very much umbrella weather. Cloudy and spitting ahead of final practice.
