Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes hasn't always been the most obedient of puppies this season, but on the long straights and fast sweeps of Silverstone, this pedigree performer shrugged off its leash, pricked back its ears and bounded to an utterly crushing pole position.

Good car.

Hamilton can also retire for the evening safe in the knowledge that no-one is going to take his 67th career pole off him after the investigation into allegedly blocking Romain Grosjean came to naught. A good day all round for the Brition.

Can he make it a perfect weekend with a fifth Silverstone victory tomorrow? All the signs suggest he can, but the race-pace of the Ferraris should not be underestimated, and the great British weather is always capable of throwing a double six.

It promises to be an enthralling race.

Hamilton's 67th pole position takes him to the brink of tying with Michael Schumacher for the all-time record.

Schumacher claimed his 68th and final pole at the 2006 French Grand Prix.

Schumacher actually stuck an F1 car on pole again at Monaco in 2012 - his final season in the sport - but didn't actually take the start from there after a five-place grid penalty was applied, the legacy of a collision with Bruno Senna at the previous race in Spain.

Not even having to dress like this could ruin Reece's mood after that stunning pole lap by Lewis Hamilton.

"Unbelievable", "stunning", "brilliant" are just some of the words overheard as fans head off.

If Hamilton's no-show at the London live event earlier this week annoyed any fans, it isn't evident at Silverstone today.

That mighty effort gave Lewis Hamilton his fifth British Grand Prix pole position, equalling the 50-year-old record held by fellow Briton Jim Clark.

Sebastian Vettel, P3: "The car really came alive this morning, that was really good. It's a shame, the last run in Q3 I think there was a bit more."

In all the excitement I missed that an incident of apparent blocking involving Hamilton and Haas's Romain Grosjean is being investigated by the stewards.

Kimi Raikkonen, P2: "It felt OK, conditions were not easy, changing a lot, but the car we had was the best it has been this weekend. Not quite fast enough for first place."

Hamilton parks his car on the start-finish line and is immediately pounced on by Jenson Button and David Coulthard for an interview.

"I like it to be dry but I like it to be tricky. Typical English conditions. I felt very comfortable in those conditions. "these are the conditions we grew up racing in."

An incredible time by Lewis Hamilton. he is half a second quicker than anybody else. He will start on pole position. The crowd here at Silverstone are on their feet.

A 1:26.600 by Hamilton. That was immense and he's on pole position.

The small matter of half a second clear of second-placed Kimi Raikkonen in the Ferrari and a full SEVEN TENTHS up on title rival Sebastian Vettel and team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

Now that was a statement of intent.
