A personal best for Sebastian Vettel as vaults up from eighth to second courtesy of a 1:45.647. That time is just nine tenths down on Lewis Hamilton but was also done on the quicker ultra-soft tyres while Hamilton's time was on the softs.

Still work going on the front of Kimi Raikkonen's car. He has lost a whopping amount of time in this session - around 20 minutes. He may be fifth fastest but clearly a lot of work to be done on his car.

"DRS doesn't work," says Fernando Alonso. Not a lot does seem to be working in his McLaren to be fair, but it is running. That's a positive.

Another mistake by Valtteri Bottas on his next lap and he's into the gravel, rubbing the tyre wall as he comes to a stop.

It looks like Bottas was getting out of the way of another car. Yellow flag and that scuppers Lewis Hamilton's quick lap.

A change at the top as Valtteri Bottas goes quickest of all with a 1:46.424, 0.015s quicker than his team-mate Lewis Hamilton. A good time by Bottas but it should have been even better. He locked up in the final sector.

There's much more than a bit of polishing going on on the other side of the Ferrari garage.

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel admits Mercedes are probably “favourites” around Spa - his feelings, like everyone else’s, based on the cars’ respective performances at Silverstone a month and a half ago.

But Ferrari are not taking it lying down - they have some aerodynamic upgrades for this race. “We brought some stuff, yes,” he said. “How much you can compare Silverstone and here I’m not sure. There are some similarities, obviously, but there’s other things that are very different. We’ll see. If we had to race in Silverstone again I think we’d do a lot better. We just didn’t get a very good weekend altogether but it’s true that Mercedes was very strong there. The fact that its likely to be similar here for us makes it fairly straightforward. I think we have only to gain. Because of how strong they were in Silverstone and some similarities, I’d say they are the favourites going to here. But for sure we’re not here to settle behind them, we want to attack. We’ll see what we can do.”

All quiet on the circuit once again with everyone back in the pits.

Pascal Wehrlein hasn't managed much running, just a solitary lap in fact.

We're not quite sure what's wrong with his Sauber. Jennie Gow's lipreading skills suggest a possible engine issue.
