There is a massive big block of red paint under the podium, which is where the top three cars will draw into at the end of this session. That paint is getting picked up by the ultra softs more than any of the others because it is a hotter tyre and it means the cars are sliding into the pit box a little bit more. They want to avoid that. They want a crisp stop in that pit box and it is hard to do when your ultra soft is covered in paint.

Stoffel Vandoorne hasn't been out yet and it doesn't look like he will bother with the Belgian definitely starting from the back of the grid.

Fernando Alonso, though, is once again getting the absolute best out of what he's got. He's 10th quickest on 1:45.090 and in with a real shot of getting into the top 10 shootout again..

Jolyon Palmer really appears to be out to prove a point and he is quicker than his team-mate Nico Hulkenberg after those first runs. The Briton does a 1:44.843 to go eighth quickest. Hulkenberg is three tenths of a second slower and down in 11th.

Sebastian Vettel's lap is only good enough for fifth. He's half a second down on Lewis Hamilton, but this is his race tyre, so was unlikely to be gunning it.

Going out early is to do with two things. One is that this circuit is quite long and so, therefore, you don't get as many laps on the track and, if you do, a big percentage of your 15 minutes are taken up just by your warm-up lap. Also, if you do get traffic then you have got another chance to do it. There's no point in going out at the end and getting traffic.

Kimi Raikkonen goes second quickest, a tenth of a second down on Lewis Hamilton.

Everyone's gone for purple boots for Q2.

Lewis Hamilton comes round in 1:43.539, the fastest lap we've seen so far in Spa and that was despite running wide late on.

More to come from the Briton. Ominous.

Bad vibrations for Kimi Raikkonen still. The Finn is effectively told to deal with it by his race engineer.

Both Ferrari and Mercedes have gone out on ultra-softs.

"This is a potential race set," Lewis Hamilton is reminded.

Daniil Kyvat - the big thing for him is not only that he is out but that Carlos Sainz stuck one in there at the end that was seven or eight tenths faster.

Vandoorne has got more penalties than a whole season in the Premier League. He is not going to be starting anywhere but last. Fernando Alonso is McLaren's chance to try and do something in qualifying.

Stoffel Vandoorne climbed to 10th at the last second but he's just out there to gather data and have a bit of fun because 65-grid place penalties means he will be starting the race back in Dusseldorf.
