Romain Grosjean has also had a spin at Turn 16, while we're just seeing a replay of a very wild sideways moment for Max Verstappen at Turn Two. The Dutchman was sawing away at the wheel there to keep the Red Bull in more or less a straight line.

    Big moment for him.

  4. Moment for Ericssonpublished at 10:07 British Summer Time 15 September 2017

The Sauber of Marcus Ericsson missed his braking at Turn 18 and needed to back up to take the corner.

No major drama and on he goes.

Red Bull also fancy their chances this weekend and they have now gone first and second on the ultra soft tyre, Ricciardo's 1:43.664 putting him 0.3s up on team-mate Verstappen.

And no sooner have I said that....

Verstappen goes fastest again, raising the bar another three tenths.

The Mercedes cars have not gone out on the quicker ultra-soft yet.

Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull goes second, 0.3s off Hamilton.

The Ferraris, who we expect to have the edge on Mercedes this weekend, are taking it pretty easy.

Sebastian Vettel has their best time so far, his 1:449 putting him fourth at present, eight tenths off Hamilton.

If the competition has been cut-throat off in recent weeks, it could be just as intense on it here at Marina Bay this weekend.

The battle between Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel for the championship has been see-sawing backwards and forwards all season, and it is likely to swing the Ferrari driver’s way again this weekend.

But the likelihood is that Red Bull will join their battle for victory. “I have confidence in myself and in the team,” said Daniel Ricciardo, who has proven to be something of a Singapore specialist in the last few years. “I think we come here with a good chance. Third, second, second, both seconds were close to wins, hopefully this is the one.”

  9. Rain still an issuepublished at 09:55 British Summer Time 15 September 2017

The track is largely dry after the rain earlier today but there are patches out there, particularly on the kerbs.

Nico Hulkenberg gives a demonstration of the kerbs' slipperiness as he slides off one and perilously close to the wall.

He survives and duly plonks the Renault into the top three.

Bottas remains at the head of the pack and he has now improved the benchmark to a 1:45.30. That's 1.2s up on team-mate Lewis Hamilton, then it's Sergio Perez in the Force India another second back.

What to expect of Mercedes this weekend? Well, the silver cars have not been at their most competitive on low-grip, slow-speed tracks this season, and on top of that Singapore has proved something of a bete noir in recent years - notwithstanding the fact that they have won two of the last three races here. The fact is that Mercedes do not have a high-downforce package that has as much downforce as those of Ferrari and Red Bull, and the team have been expecting a tough time in Singapore for some time. Lewis Hamilton said: “We all know this weekend is going to be a lot harder for us as the other two teams have, like, another wing step to us. They have more downforce. So it is going to be a difficult weekend but I still come here with the mentality and drive of trying to do the unexpected.”
