Mercedes have continued to show they have a very fast racing car but we know it has a sort of knife-edge set up sensitivity. It either works and works brilliantly or there is a bit of head scratching.

After the relative success of Singapore, McLaren are expecting a more difficult weekend in Malaysia, where engine power is a much larger part of the performance equation. But after bringing a significant aerodynamic upgrade, which only Fernando Alonso has because of a shortage of parts, the Spaniard was third in the wet and fifth in the dry on Friday.

Racing director Eric Boullier said the pace was “a bit better than expected” but added that he believed the outright speed was flattered because McLaren did a “performance run” - ie really low fuel - which the top teams did not.

Alonso said it had been a “positive” day but that it was “early” in terms of assessing the upgrade. "In the first session, we probably went out when the track was less wet and we moved into third, which is always nice. In the second session the car was still handing well in the dry. We don't have big things to change for so that's usually positive, so we'll see what we can do. We have to analyse [the update] well tonight because every run I went out with a different configuration and it went well in the first, the second and the third. Q3 will not be easy as usual, but we'll try to be there and see what happens.”
