Let's start with those drivers that have some grid penalties to deal with this weekend.

  3. Welcome backpublished at 19:30 British Summer Time 20 October 2017

Championship leader Lewis Hamilton was, unsurprisingly, the fastest man in first practice. Can he do the same in session two? Let's find out.

And that is the end of practice session one. Go and get some food and relax for a bit before we come back at 19:30 BST for session two.

Don't miss it. See you then.

  5. Hamilton dominates US GP first practicepublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 20 October 2017

Andrew Benson's report from the opening session is here.

Lewis Hamilton set a searing pace as he dominates first practice at the United States Grand Prix.

The title leader's Mercedes was 0.593 seconds quicker than rival Sebastian Vettel's Ferrari, with Hamilton's team-mate Valtteri Bottas third.

Hamilton will clinch his fourth title on Sunday if he wins the race with Vettel lower than sixth.

But he has labelled this idea as "silly", saying he expects Ferrari will not have a fourth bad race in a row.

  6. Full standingspublished at 17:39 British Summer Time 20 October 2017

These are the full standings from the first practice session. Fernando Alonso was the only man not to set a time, because of a hydraulic leak.

His team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne fared much better, coming fifth. Carlos Sainz came 10th in his first session in the Renault. Brendon Hartley 14th fastest and I'm sure he will be happy with that.

What a start to the weekend for Lewis Hamilton, who could end it with another world title.

We haven't mentioned the Saubers yet, and they are where they normally are - at the back. Charles Leclerc is 19th, with Marcus Ericsson 18th. Going to be another long weekend for them.

We weren't expecting to see Fernando Alonso in this session, but he comes out of the pits, but it is only a fleeting sight of the Spaniard as he soon is pushed back in.

Hopefully, he will be able to take full part in the second session, which gets going at 20:00 BST.

  14. Haas hope for morepublished at 17:21 British Summer Time 20 October 2017

It is the home race for the Haas team, the only American team in Formula 1. At the moment their fans will be hoping for better than what Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen have served up so far today.

Magnussen is only 15th fastest and Grosjean 16th fastest, with only 19 men setting a time with McLaren's Fernando Alonso not taking part in the session because of a hydraulic leak.

Lance Stroll is the fastest of those who have gone on the ultrasofts - seventh quickest so far.
