Hamilton pipped Vettel by 0.239 seconds as the German rescued his day with a superb final lap.
Vettel was only fourth after the first runs in final qualifying, more than 0.7secs off the pace, but leaped up on his last run.
Hamilton, who took his 11th pole in 17 races this season, will clinch the title if he wins the race with Vettel lower than fifth.
He already has the most pole positions of all time, now he has the clear lead in the all-time number of front row places as well.

Max Verstappen qualified sixth, but has a 15-place grid penalty.
Valtteri Bottas, who qualified third, said: "Disappointing for us - but it was quite close with Lewis also. Disappointing, but there's always tomorrow."

Sebastian Vettel, who starts second on the grid, says: "I was happy in the end with the car. We lacked the rhythm in the first sector going into the second, but came good when it mattered.
"I believe our race pace has been good, especially in qualifying, but well done to Lewis today.
"It would be good to win the other races as well as this one, but we'll take each day as it comes."

He says: "It is highly unlikely that that will be the case. Sebastian Vettel did a great job to get his car back up there.
"Sebastian is right there and unless he makes a silly mistake, which is unlikely - he is a four-time world champion - we will see it going on."
Lewis Hamilton, who starts in pole position, says: "The team have done a great job, the track was very difficult with the wind picking up.
"But I love this track it is such a fantastic track to drive, I love it. It is always hot in the car, it is just the right temperature today. It is going to be a great race, a tough one, but I'm the best prepared I can be."
