Orlando Walters: If F1 uses the ultimate machines with the best drivers, why don't we have any racing in cooler temperatures? We have Bahrain, Qater, Singapore, Malaysia (oops, scratch the last one) why not cooler climates too?

Dale Barber: Why don't they scrap winter testing, or just limit it to X amount of km? It'd make the in season progression a lot more interesting. No one seems to like it or care, not drivers or fans so why go to the expense of having it?

Benjamin Lee‏: How about we have prize giveaways during testing? You could have one-hour fastest lap/most lap shootouts during the session, and the winning team would get prizes like a pass into the next session of qualifying at any race, an extra engine or gearbox with no penalty etc.

We just have seen the first pictures of Sebastian Vettel on the track so things may be getting livelier.

  15. No quick fix for Sauberpublished at 10:03 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2018

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Effectively slowest on the first day was Sauber - if you discount Force India tester Nikita Mazepin, who did only 21 laps, and Williams’ Sergey Sirotkin, who ran only in the freezing afternoon.

There is a sense of optimism around Sauber this year, following their links with Alfa Romeo. But team principal Frederic Vasseur wanted to make it clear that there was going to be no quick fix.

“It is a long-term project and we have to go step by step. We have to build up a new F1 team and increase the size of every department in the company. It will take time but we are pushing like hell and we will improve and we will improve consistently during the season.”

Jennifer Harris: If winter testing in Bahrain is too hot and Barcelona too cold why don't they return to Jerez? It's pleasantly warm and they may have the chance of some proper wet weather testing too.

Munro Gow: Hopes for F1 2018? Forget noise and aesthetics, how about wheel to wheel racing for the entire race and not 2/3 sec per lap gap from 1st to last.

Jack✌: I'll be so excited to see everyone on the field more tightly packed this year, Especially for more teams to be fighting for wins and bringing it up Mercedes and Ferrari. Saying that, I'll always want Lewis Hamilton to be scoring them wins!

  17. Testing on Friday? "It won't happen. 100%"published at 09:49 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2018

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

The unusually cold weather - and the forecast for worse, with the potential of snow even on Wednesday - has got the teams thinking about how to maximise this week. And one proposal is to postpone running on Wednesday and use Friday instead.

The problem with it is that it requires unanimous agreement of all the teams and Williams have a ‘filming day’ scheduled for then. So far, Williams have not been asked to move the date, and one source close to the situation said: "It won't happen: 100%."

How did Williams do on the first day of testing with the new car designed under the new design leadership? Lance Stroll was ninth fastest and 2.273secs off the pace.

But the Canadian said: “We had a smooth morning, no problems, which is always a positive thing on the first day. I'm happy about that. It's a bit early to say if we have a championship-winning car or not! It seems to be good so far. I just need more laps.”
