And that is all for today. Thanks for joining me and for your fantastic comments keeping me entertained.

Sebastian Vettel is fastest, Valtteri Bottas is second quickest, while Robert Kubica is seventh, but faster than Sergey Sirotkin, the man chosen for the second Williams seat.

I'm off to get some food. Thanks no lunch break.

I'm back tomorrow at 07:30 GMT for more incoherent rambling on day three, hopefully it won't be hampered by snow.

    My watch has ended.

Ferrari and Mercedes have given the first indication that they could be set for another close title battle in 2018.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes were first and second fastest on day two testing at Circuit de Catalunya in Spain.

Vettel was quickest but Bottas was only 0.303 seconds behind despite using a tyre one grade softer and slower.

Lewis Hamilton had been due to drive in the afternoon but Mercedes kept Bottas in the car to maximise running time.

  3. Hammer time tomorrow?published at 17:38 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2018

We only saw 11 drivers today, so tomorrow is likely to be a busy one.

Lewis Hamilton was meant to go in the afternoon session today, but that didn't happen so we may well see him all day on Wednesday.

It certainly sounds like he likes this season's car.

At one stage he was well adrift of all the other times, but managed to snatch 10th, finishing six thousandths of a second faster than Haas' Kevin Magnussen.

  12. Broken exhaust clip scuppers Vandoornepublished at 17:01 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2018

We asked what happened to Stoffel Vandoorne and we are hearing that his McLaren had an exhaust clip break, which caused overheating in the engine bay and that meant he could not get back out there after his 37 laps.

But it is not all doom and gloom for McLaren as Vandoorne has managed to post the third fastest time of the day.

  13. Strategic penalties?published at 16:55 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2018

Renault Sport boss Cyril Abiteboul says the company is open to the possibility of taking strategic engine-related grid penalties this year if it looks like it will be a competitive advantage. Drivers are limited to three engines for the season - down from four last year - and all manufacturers have acknowledged the challenge making them last will be.

Abiteboul said: “I’m accepting you need to optimise your potential. If it is better for everyone to use four engines rather than three, we (will) make that decision, but it is too early to make that decision. First I want to see where we are sitting in the pecking order, in terms of mileage, reliability, performance against what we have measured on the dyno and priorities set for the Renault team, which is what matters the most.”

Mercedes engine chief Andy Cowell said last week that he was planning for all their teams to use only three engines. "We think overall it is better to create a power unit that does have the required durability and doesn’t lose significant performance through that life," Cowell said. "If you work on the assumption that you are not going to win one race then you are potentially throwing the championship away.

"There are other issues that come along through a season, unplanned issues, that would unfortunately give those sort of painful weekends. So what we are working on is it is three engines."

    What's happened to Vandoorne?published at 16:42 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2018

Philip Valentine‏: Only 37 laps for McLaren today?! Has there been an issue we don't know about? I mean Kubica has done 36 in half the time + snow.

Ben: Not seen Stoffel this afternoon... What is the issue?

Some questions will be coming McLaren's way at the end. Three hours ago they said they were expecting Vandoorne to play a full part in the afternoon session (as you can see below).

Apart from Kevin Magnussen (32 laps in the Haas) after going through the gravel in the early session, no driver has had fewer laps than Vandoorne's 37 (Kubica's now up to 39).
