How would you spice up testing?

James Agar: Add a fanzone, some guided tours and some music.

Tom Cerson: Stream it on youtube like Indycar do.

Richard Khan Jr: By not having any. Start the season now and the teams have FP1, 2 & 3 to get their new 2018 cars into gear and ready. That will definitely spice thing up! You can see from the cold conditions that they have now that no times are representative and they only testing parts.

  7. Magnussen narrowly avoids a disasterpublished at 14:25 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2018

Woah! This was nearly an absolute disaster for Kevin Magnussen. He spins, loses it and has to do everything he can to stop himself slamming into the tyres.

A lucky, lucky escape. Watch it with the video below from the Formula 1 Twitter account (click on the link).

  8. Kubica in actionpublished at 14:23 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2018

Who wants to see some footage of Robert Kubica in Formula 1 testing? Of course you do. Greg is in position to catch the footage.

Let's all hope we see Kubica in a grand prix sometime this season.

Great news too, as he has already gone faster than Charles Leclerc in the Sauber and Kevin Magnussen in the Haas. Kubica is sitting in ninth position after 10 laps out there.

  9. 'Sergey is ready to make that step up'published at 14:19 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2018

    Dan Knutson
    F1 journalist in Barcelona

Williams chief technical officer Paddy Lowe met the media upstairs in the team’s hospitality unit. Here’s what he had to say on Sergey Sirotkin and the new Williams FW41.

“Sergey is a very committed young man. He has done a very solid apprenticeship in motor racing. He is very ready to make that step up to F1. A great person to work with because he has a fantastic work ethic, and he is very mature for his age. He understands technical things very quickly. A very clever guy.”

“What you see in the car, there is quite a direction in the new packaging. Around the cooling in particular we found a lot more volume, which translated into performance. That doesn’t mean we are unhappy with last year’s car. It is part of progress. You have to keep finding lap time in this business in order to move forward and be competitive. So this was one of the directions we took.”

  11. Vettel goes even fasterpublished at 14:08 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2018

Meanwhile, at the top of the times, Sebastian Vettel, who caused a red flag by going into the gravel earlier on, has just shaved 0.053 seconds off his best time. The time of the day is now his 1:20.115.

That was set on the soft tyres. All of the top 10 drivers have set their best times on the softs, apart from Stoffel Vandoorne in third (hypersoft) and Max Verstappen in fourth (medium).

  12. Good luck, Robertpublished at 14:06 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2018

This could well be the story of the day. Williams' reserve driver Robert Kubica has now gone on to the track.

  14. 'We want to make the most of the current conditions'published at 14:03 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2018

We already knew Mercedes would not be using Lewis Hamilton today, and they have gone on the defensive as to why there is no world champion today.

They write: "Mileage is king so we want to make the most of the current conditions. A driver swap would require switching our seat, pedals, even stickers when we could be out on track."

    So now you know.

How would you spice up testing?

Mihir‏: One way to spice up testing is to have the grid for the Aussie GP (or starting GP) every year determined by testing pace. Let's see who will sand bag then to hide their pace from the other teams.

David Nimmo: Why would you try to "spice up" testing? If people want to follow it then fine, but this part of the season isn't for the fans, it's for the teams, so that they can put on a good show for the rest of the year.

Gav‏: Spice up testing with a ten lap race involving just the reserve driver from each team during each lunch break no prize just bragging rights.
