  7. Alonso second, but not for longpublished at 13:53 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2018

So, so close to it suddenly being a good day for McLaren.

Alonso had suddenly jumped up to second in the Formula 1 timing app. But, alas, he had cut a chicane so that lap time is wiped from the books.

Alex Withington: I know this is thinking unbelievably positively... but there's still time for Alonso to do a race distance today.

Mill Felt‏: Looks like Alonso is hurrying up before the car brakes down again.

Luke Marshall: Really starting to wonder if it’s Alonso’s aggressive driving style that is hindering the obviously fragile McLaren. Stoffel seems to have a much smoother, Button-esque style.

Just the 15 laps so far for Alonso. Only Carlos Sainz, who has not been seen since a gearbox problem earlier on, has done fewer.

  11. Alonso seventhpublished at 13:37 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2018

Fernando Alonso is back in the pits now, but is seventh fastest today, quicker than both Lewis Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo.

If only that could happen in the races.

Good news, Andrew. The words 'on track' have just flashed up on the F1 timing app and they are next to the name of Fernando Alonso.

Don't believe me? Well, here is some footage.

Right, some on track action to tell you about. Sergey Sirotkin in the Williams is approaching the 100-lap mark. He is up to 98 and has recently improved his best time to 1:19.189, that is sixth quickest out of the nine to have set a time (something Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz have not done).

You get the feeling Sirotkin needs a good start to the season, especially with Williams reserve driver Robert Kubica performing well when given the chance in Barcelona.

  19. 'Australia is knocking on the door'published at 13:08 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2018

    Dan Knutson
    F1 journalist in Barcelona

Much as he enjoys testing and developing the Williams FW41, Robert Kubica offered to give up his allocated time in the car today so that Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin could drive.

“From my side I had quite a clear idea of what the car does, and where we have to work on it,” he told reporters this afternoon. “I thought the drivers could benefit more from being in the car to try to prepare better for Australia.”

And how competitive will the Williams be in the season opener?

“I have a good idea, I think, of what is going on,” Kubica said. “But things can change quickly, and so it is just too early. It is the very early stage of the new car. Australia is knocking on the door, and shortly we will be there, and then everybody will get good answers because in the end once you are in qually you give it everything. So we will see.”
