The fastest time today has been Kimi Raikkonen's 1:17.375, set on the pink hyper-softs.

Pirelli have announced that the hyper-softs will be available for the seventh race of the season - the Canadian Grand Prix from 8-10 June.

Pirelli traditionally brings their softest tyres to Montreal, with the hypersoft, ultrasoft and supersoft the three compounds to be made available to teams for this year’s race.

Kimi Raikkonen is now a second faster than anyone else after smashing down a lap of 1:17.375 on the hyper-softs.

Still a bit slower than Sebastian Vettel from yesterday though, but his unofficial track record of 1:17.182.

Romain Grosjean (1:18.590) and Brendon Hartley (1:19.152) have also gone quicker recently.

  5. 'We have not had the easiest time'published at 11:15 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2018

    Dan Knutson
    F1 journalist in Barcelona

Williams deputy team principal Claire Williams talked to the media here today.

“It is always fairly difficult with testing,” she said when asked to assess the team’s progress. “You can look at the time sheets; they are a relatively good barometer of where we are, but we have not had the easiest time over the past few days that we have been here.

"Certainly last week was difficult; it was difficult for everybody with the weather. But we have once again found it quite difficult working with the tyres and trying to switch them on, particularly the softs, the super-softs and the hyper-softs.

“Overall we did great job to get a fully and totally revised new race car here. That was a piece of work that a few of us back at the factory were certainly worried might be a bit challenging to get it here. So that was good. I hope that we are fighting for fourth this year.”

Robert Kubica was supposed to drive today, but he volunteered to step aside so the race drivers could get more track time.

  7. 'Fast laps' for Raikkonenpublished at 11:02 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2018

Kimi Raikkonen was feeling unwell on Wednesday, but is back today, and at the top of the charts.

His effort of 1:18.238 is the time to beat. It is beatable though as his team-mate Sebastian Vettel set the fastest lap recorded at the circuit with an effort of 1:17.182 yesterday.

Not been much coming from the Renault social media team today as their man Carlos Sainz has only done four laps, the lowest amount of any of the 10 drivers so far.

"Gearbox gremlins" is what they put it down to.

  10. High Haas hopespublished at 10:49 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2018

Worries for McLaren and Renault, but not so for Haas. Romain Grosjean has just moved into second, quicker than Lewis Hamilton, with a lap of 1:19.098, and wait, he goes even quicker with 1:18.590 on the super-softs.

Haas came eighth in the constructors' championship last season, with only McLaren and Sauber behind them, but could this be a good year for them?

  11. Renault investigatingpublished at 10:45 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2018

It has also been a worrying day for Renault as Carlos Sainz could only manage four laps, with a gearbox issue.

We are hearing they are changing the engine now and investigating the cause of the trouble.

Both Sainz and Nico Hulkenberg are pencilled in to be in action today.

  12. Six seconds of Alonsopublished at 10:42 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2018

We don't know when, or if, we will see Alonso again so savour this video.

  13. Questions for Williamspublished at 10:38 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2018

Sergey Sirotkin has done 49 laps for the day, but is now back in the pits.

Meanwhile, his boss Claire Williams faces the media. She is probably going to get questions on whether they have made the right decision with their selections as Robert Kubica has outpaced both Sirotkin and Lance Stroll in testing sessions.

More problems for Fernando Alonso and McLaren

Phil Evans: Don't panic everyone! It's just a ploy by McLaren to interrupt everyone's long runs. Come Australia they'll be on the front row. Honest. Please...?

David Nutley: I always felt McLaren were unfair to Honda last year, claiming they 'probably' had the best chassis, and would be on podiums if it wasn't for Honda. Got a LOT to prove now, with a car that always breaks down, while the Toro Rosso grinds out times and laps day in day out.
