A couple more Formula 1 jokes for you all.

Danny Skeedale: What do F1 drivers like eating?... Fast food.. *collective groans*

Benjamin Lee‏: How many McLaren employees does it take to change a light bulb? We don't know, as they're always too busy trying to fix the car.

Ben, I can't figure out if that is a joke or you're just a disgruntled McLaren fan!

Comedians unite. This is your chance to tell that Formula 1 joke you have always wanted to tell. Hashtag #bbcf1. Make us laugh.

  2. Bottas up to fifthpublished at 12:58 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2018

With his very first lap, Bottas goes faster than Lewis Hamilton managed all day.

What should we read into that? Er, absolutely nothing.

But anyway, Bottas now has a lap of 1:19.001 compared to Hamilton's best of 1:19.464.

Bottas is on the medium tyres, Hamilton's best came on the super-soft.

  3. Here comes Bottaspublished at 12:55 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2018

Right, enough moaning about my belly and we have just had the words we all like to see on the (sometimes) trusty Formula 1 app and that is 'on track'.

Williams' Sergey Sirotkin is having another go after 88 laps already in the bag with Valtteri Bottas in his Mercedes out for the first time today after team-mate Lewis Hamilton did 97 laps earlier on.

Pirelli may have been rubbish at lifting hungry journalists' spirits (see 12:34 GMT), but Bob McFeil has stepped up with a joke.

He says: "Here’s a joke to cheer you up Michael: How many McLaren employees does it take to change a lightbulb? I wouldn’t know, everyone hires Mercedes’ personnel to do the job instead."

    Cheers Bob, appreciate the effort.

A smokey Sauber, belonging to Charles Leclerc after he banged into a barrier earlier on.

Halfway through the session and Kimi Raikkonen leads the way. Valtteri Bottas is set to go out in the afternoon. Can he get close to his fellow Finn?

However, the fastest time today was set on the hyper-soft, which Mercedes don't have available so probably not.

Ricardo Miller: Lots of statements been throwing around about Red Bull being in front of Ferrari but I'm still waiting to see what that is based on because so far I have seen nothing to make such statement. Ferrari had a a better car than Red Bull last year and this year is no different.

Michael Simmons‏: You would have thought that Mclaren would have a plug & play solution to engine replacement by now the amount they have done. Should be able to do it with literally there eyes closed?

Christopher Roche‏: I have a feeling Mercedes are just going for consistency and not looking to let anyone know how quick they really are, Melbourne is going to be really interesting.

Sainz will now stay in the car this afternoon because of that lack of running this morning. Four laps and no timed lap for the Spaniard so far today.

  16. Bottas 'ready to race'published at 11:52 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2018

    Dan Knutson
    F1 journalist in Barcelona

Valtteri Bottas feels he and the Mercedes are ready to race, so his time in the car this afternoon will be pure bonus laps.

“It was nice to get a race simulation under my belt and feeling the tyres and the car in the long run,” he said at a press conference in the paddock today.

“There is so much time in the race sim you do in testing to try different things in the car, and you really get comfortable in there. So it was positive for me yesterday. I think Lewis is doing pretty much the same (today).

“For us, the one lap pure pace is still a little bit unknown. We have seen some quick times from others, but I guess we will find out in a couple weeks.”

    Panic...

Dan Bridgeman: Yesterday I was satisfied that Hamilton’s lap was so much slower than Vettel’s due to the difference in tyre compound. That doesn’t apply today - why is Kimi so much quicker on the same tyre? Getting worried.

    ...or don't panic...

Danny Ward: Good luck seeing the silver arrows going for the blistering laps everyone else is aiming for. They haven't brought the hypersofts to the tests. The wait to see how quick over one lap they are, will go onto Melbourne.
