Almost a practice prang. Max Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonen, who had just come out of the pits, almost crash on the first corner. They are second and first respectively, but nearly had their cars in pieces.

"Verstappen almost took me out," moans Raikkonen.

Sounds like whoever is running the Mercedes Twitter account is a bit concerned by Ferrari.

  11. Hamilton up to secondpublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 7 April 2018

Lewis Hamilton was down in fifth, sandwiched between the two Red Bulls, Valtteri Bottas was third and Ferrari still led the way through Kimi Raikkonen with Sebastian Vettel second.

But just then, Hamilton moves himself up to second, above Vettel, but still eight tenths of a second behind Raikkonen. This is looking like a very encouraging weekend for Ferrari fans.

A first corner lock-up from Valtteri Bottas means that lap is a write-off. He veers off the track, but not for long.

    Your thoughts on grid girls

Ant Chesney: Re Grid Girls. Isn't a (male dominated) FIA/F1 management making a decision about whether or not it is sexist having Grid Girls being sexist by not allowing the girls to make their own choice?

Natnael Guliano: I honestly don’t see a problem with ‘grid girls’ and I don’t see why Liberty Media are trying to get rid of them and it should be up to the organisers whether they use grid girls or not, the FIA has no business trying to ruin a tradition.

Gavin Barber‏: Grid-girls. Post race ceremonies in Oz looked like they'd taken the wrong stairwell and encounted three large men with trumpets instead. Hardly a glamorous image.

  14. Ferrari one-two as Raikkonen goes to the toppublished at 13:43 British Summer Time 7 April 2018

Yesterday it was Kimi Raikkonen first, Sebastian Vettel second in session two.

And that is what happening in Bahrain now, as Kimi Raikkonen is the first to dip under the one minute 30 seconds. His time is 1:29.868, just under a full second quicker than his team-mate.

Amit Mandalia‏: I worry for Williams this year, wondering if the inexperience with their two drivers will hold them back from where they should be.

Amit, you have every reason to worry. They are the two slowest out there. Sergey Sirotkin is down in 19th and Lance Stroll is last. Will Williams go on to regret that decision to pick Sirotkin over the dream return for Robert Kubica?

Good things come to those who wait. We hadn't seen any Red Bull action for the first half of this session, but their lads are out and doing the business on the track now.

Max Verstappen has jumped second, in between fastest man Valtteri Bottas and his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

Daniel Ricciardo had been fourth fastest, but has just been bumped down to fifth thanks to Kimi Raikkonen.

Grid penalties: Are they fair / what would be a better punishment?

Jacqui Baker-Stubbs: Weren’t F1 trying to reduce grid penalties this year? McLaren had enough penalties last year to put them at the back of the grid for years to come, but we had hope of less penalties this year. We had Daniel Ricciardo last race and now Lewis Hamilton. Will it stop?

Jennifer Harris‏: Grid penalties may seem harsh but intended to stop the richer teams using a new engine and gearbox every race to be fairer to the smaller teams. What I want to see an end to is breaking in three new engines in the same weekend therefore suffering penalties only once.

Andreas Selwood‏: Instead of penalising the drivers five grid positions for a team error (gearbox failure) how about reducing the team's/constructor's points by five places while leaving the driver to score the full points? Simple solution.

No sign of either Red Bulls just yet. They are two of seven drivers to not set a time yet with 30 minutes left in this session.

That aerodynamic update for both Toro Rossos that Andrew was talking about has seen a good afternoon so far for Toro Rosso. Brendon Hartley, who struggled yesterday, is fifth quickest, with team-mate Pierre Gasly one place behind him in the times.
