That red flag, caused by that Sergey Sirotkin prang, could end the session seven minutes earlier than expected. Not good news for Red Bull either as Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen were about to try and set some representative times.

Max Verstappen is only seventh and Daniel Ricciardo 12th. They may not get a chance to improve on that.

He was well too quick there and there is going to be a lot of work for Williams to do.

Disaster for Williams. Sergey Sirotkin makes a right mess of the right side of his car. He smacks into the wall at pace down at turn three to rip the right tyre from his car.

"Sorry guys, I crashed, sorry for that," says Sirotkin.

    Red flag.

  4. 'No comfort for Mercedes'published at 11:49 British Summer Time 28 April 2018

Yesterday, Mercedes were not super quick, but could take comfort by the fact Sebastian Vettel was nowhere. But now there is no comfort for Mercedes seeing those Ferrari times with Red Bull to run again.

Lewis Hamilton is now more than four tenths of a second off Sebastian Vettel, but only 16 thousandths of a second faster than team-mate Valtteri Bottas in fourth.

Red Bull had a good day yesterday, today the smiles will be coming from Ferrari faces.

But Ferrari respond immediately. Kimi Raikkonen regains second, and Sebastian Vettel goes even quicker. His best effort is now 1:43.091, shaving a tenth of a second off his previous best.

A good minute for Mercedes. Valtteri Bottas, on the ultrasofts, is up to second, nearly four tenths adrift of Sebastian Vettel.

Then Lewis Hamilton takes himself up to third.

Kimi Raikkonen is now fourth, but Red Bull have not grabbed the initiative today as Max Verstappen is sixth and Daniel Ricciardo 12th.

Charles Leclerc in his Sauber is another one struggling to get to grips with the conditions. He is down in 14th though, much better than his team-mate Marcus Ericsson down in 20th out of 20.

No-one has come close to Sebastian Vettel's best lap of 1:43.176 so far. That is more than seven tenths better than his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, while Sergio Perez has just jumped up to third six hundredths of a second further back.

  13. Postpublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 28 April 2018

Sergio Perez is another man who has happy memories of this track, coming third in 2016 back when it was called the European Grand Prix.

He has just gone quickest over sector three and that is good enough to take him up to sixth overall. Daniel Ricciardo, fastest yesterday in session two, is down in 11th today.

A tough time out there for Romain Grosjean. He just overcooked it into turn 15 and went into the run-off area, and this time he spins around at turn 16.

He is not the only one having problems. Valtteri Bottas at turn seven goes off the track, as does Esteban Ocon at turn 16.

Slippery, windy and tricky. Qualifying could be very, very interesting later on.

Lance Stroll is fifth in the times, but, as usual, not everything goes smoothly for Williams as the Canadian has to head back to the pits.

Brendon Hartley dived off the track at turn 15 a few minutes ago, and Romain Grosjean in his Haas has just done likewise. Luckily there is a large run-off area there so no harm done to man or machine.

Lance Stroll bagged a podium place here last season and he clearly likes it round the streets of Baku as he is in fifth at the moment, ahead of Ricciardo and Bottas.

Williams certainly need a good weekend after three pretty miserable ones.
