Jeremiah Kariuki‏: Verstappen is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. To get to points position, Verstappen will need to be aggressive. If he crashes, hits the wall or get caught in tangles, he will be damned. If opts not to be aggressive, he will still be damned.

Five races gone out of 21 this season and Lewis Hamilton has a 17-point lead. The top six is filled with the six you would expect with Fernando Alonso in the "best of the rest" spot.

He only picked up 17 points all of last season, but has nearly that doubled that after less than a quarter of the 2018 campaign.

At the bottom only Sergey Sirotkin and Romain Grosjean have no picked up any points, with Grosjean failing to finish three of the opening five races of the season.

    Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer in Monaco

So, strategy. A one-stop is the fastest race, and everyone will be trying to do one. The question is how. The top 10 have little choice - run the hyper-softs as long as possible and then switch, probably to the super-soft, although some may try the ultra. How long will the hypers go? Pirelli says 15 laps. Which probably means well over 20. The big question is also how well the hypers will go - ie how much pace will they lose as they degrade?

Can the front-runners pull enough of a gap on the chasing midfield pack to drop into, or will they come out behind slower cars, and if so how will that affect the race. The choice is likely to be even tougher for the likes of Esteban Ocon, Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz, sixth, seventh and eighth, whose cars don’t have the pace of the top three teams. Outside the top 10, the most likely choice is ultras for probably 30 or more laps and then super-softs. But some will undoubtedly go the other way around.

  17. What happened last year?published at 14:00 British Summer Time 27 May 2018

A win in Monaco means you don't mind too much when one of your fellow drivers decides to pour champagne right into your face. It was a Ferrari one-two last year with Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen first and second.

Daniel Ricciardo, second in 2016, came third last year.
