"This is the best race of the year. The British Grand Prix is super special but this is super unique."

  4. 'Mercedes are concerned'published at 13:14 British Summer Time 27 May 2018

Lewis Hamilton was kicking himself a little after qualifying. The weekend has been difficult for Mercedes, as they always expected, but after being up by more than 0.2secs on his final lap, he slipped back in the middle and final sectors - where all the corners are, effectively. “I’m naturally not happy with that,” he said. “Obviously I would have been second.”

Well, not obviously, actually. It may just be that the Mercedes is not quick enough there, and the lap was always going to get away from him. Anyway, race-wise, Mercedes are concerned. They didn’t want to start on the hyper-soft tyre, but they have been forced into it because they were not quick enough to get through second qualifying on the ultra-soft.

They are worried about ‘graining’ - where the surface tears, costing grip. Valtteri Bottas even warned that he thought a one-stop would be “difficult”. But they’ll have to try, because a two-stop means too much lost time in traffic. It’s damage limitation for Mercedes.

  13. I have to look at myself - Verstappenpublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 27 May 2018

    Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer in Monaco

Max Verstappen - facing the results of a crash, missing qualifying and a start from the pit lane - was understandably not a happy bunny after qualifying and was in no real mood to open his soul to the media in his debrief. He could not explain why he was making so many mistakes, he said. “I have to look at myself. I made a mistake myself.” What to do in the race? “I don’t know, I need to look into it. I guess we have the pace but when you get held up it is not what you want.

"You want to try to drive in free air as long as you can but it also depends on when other people are pitting.” What will Red Bull’s strategy be? They’ll want run long. But do they stop him on the first lap and then try to go to the end on super-softs. Or start him on them and stop as late as possible, hoping to benefit from a safety car? Tricky.

What do you want / expect to see today?

JJ Jackson: What lap do we think Verstappen will crash out on today? Can't see him getting through narrow Monaco streets and overtaking 17 cars without incident. My money is lap 3 Grand Hotel.

Alex Withington‏: Max's approach and mentality is likely to be closely watched today. He's been told to calm down but to overtake here you have to be aggressive. Really tricky one for him to make progress starting at the back.

  15. Verstappen crash 'unnecessary' - Markopublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 27 May 2018

Max Verstappen's Monaco Grand Prix practice crash was "unnecessary" and caused by impatience, Red Bull motorsport boss Helmut Marko says.

Red Bull were unable to repair the car for qualifying after his misjudgement in final practice and Verstappen, who has now had at least one incident in each of this season's six races, will start from the back.

"He has to learn not always to drive flat out," Marko told BBC Sport. "They are all different incidents but this one for sure is a very unnecessary one.

"He is not patient enough. He wants always to be the fastest but the result is only when you cross the line. He needs to be more patient, judge the situations better."

Marko, a former Formula 1 driver, said he would wait until after the weekend to have a conversation with Verstappen about the number of mistakes he is making.

Asked if Verstappen understood that he had an issue that needed addressing, Marko said: "Issue is maybe not the right word. It is always a different situation but they are all because he is impatient."

You won't see a time next to Max Verstappen in that qualifying table, and that is because he smashed his Red Bull into the wall during the third practice session - a session where he was the fastest man at that moment.

But coming into the Swimming Pool section he clipped a barrier, and that took him into the opposite barrier with a heavy smash.

Despite a couple of hours frantic work from both sets of Red Bull mechanics, they could not get him back out for qualifying. A geear box change gave him a five-place grid penalty, but he was at the back anyway.

  17. 'I will just try to be perfect'published at 12:51 British Summer Time 27 May 2018

Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo, speaking on the drivers' parade: "Lap by lap I will just try to be perfect and make the job for the team as easy as possible."

  18. Ricciardo's race to lose?published at 12:50 British Summer Time 27 May 2018

    Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer in Monaco

Surely this race is Daniel Ricciardo’s to lose. Once his team-mate Max Verstappen stuck it in the barriers and failed to make it out for qualifying, the Australian was always going to get pole if he produced his best, and he very much did that.

Now, though, the pressure is on. Ricciardo believes he is owed a Monaco victory after a bungled tyre stop stole one from him two years ago. But as he said, he has to earn it. There is a start to negotiate, a difficult strategic race managing sensitive hyper-soft tyres in the first stint and a need for the team to call his pit stop right. It’s a long way from won yet.

  19. How they qualifiedpublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 27 May 2018

    What happened yesterday?

Well Daniel Ricciardo continued his Monaco 2018 dominance by taking pole position. That means the Australian was the fastest man in all three practice sessions and all three stages of the qualifying.

He is definitely the man to beat.
