Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton pipped Ferrari Kimi Raikkonen in final practice at the British Grad Prix as Toro Rosso’s Brendon Hartley walked away unhurt from a massive crash.
The New Zealander suffered a suspension failure as he hit the brakes at 190mph for the Brooklands left-hander, was launched by the gravel trap and smashed into the barriers.
He climbed out and was taken to the medical centre for checks but was declared fit to continue driving.
However, there are doubts as to whether his car will be ready to take part in qualifying after suffering extensive damage - and also over Toro Rosso’s participation.
The team did not send Hartley’s team-mate Pierre Gasly out for the rest of the session as they tried to establish what had caused the failure. The lower wishbone appeared to break at the wheel upright.
The incident brought out a red flag for 10 minutes, but once it was resumed Hamilton set the fastest time, with Raikkonen the only driver to get close to the world champion, who is gunning for a fifth win in a row at Silverstone and a record sixth overall.
Hamilton was 0.093 seconds quicker than Raikkonen, and a massive 0.642secs ahead of Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas in third.
World championship leader Sebastian Vettel had a neck problem and missed the final part of the session when the fastest times were set, and was 1.129secs off the pace.
Ferrari said he had a “nuisance on his neck”. He ended the session early to have it checked over by his physiotherapist.
Drivers have been complaining this weekend about the bumpiness of Silverstone, which was resurfaced over the winter.
Red Bull appear a long way off what looks like a fight for pole between Mercedes and Ferrari - Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo were 0.006secs apart but 1.3secs off the pace.
Sauber’s Charles Leclerc was an impressive seventh fastest, from the Haas drivers Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean.
Fernando Alonso was 13th fastest but McLaren were the only team not run the soft tyres in the session, preferring to stick with the slower mediums throughout. They have not yet responded to questions as to why.
Andrew Benson's verdict from FP3 is in...
TJ Singh: You can continue talking about the footie till net likes get to 500. Likes 585, dislikes 130. Net total 455. You still have 10 minutes!
Kayleigh: re: 11:54 people just need to lighten up. I'm not a football fan, but what are the chances an England quarter-final and British GP will fall on the same weekend again? Carry on with the football chat I say! :)
I did make a promise, Kayleigh. But thank you for your support anyway!

Roll up, roll up get your merchandise. Fancy looking like your favourite Formula 1 driver? Well you're in luck with all sorts of coats, hats and caps in team colours available. But it doesn't come cheap. £55 for a Williams T-shirt. Any takers? Anyone? Anyone?
The JV-Tossh: Looking like one good Ferrari customer battle this weekend. Haas/Sauber flying. Ferrari engine looks on top somehow. Any idea how?
The top 10 in FP3 was completed by Sauber and Haas, with Charles Leclerc driving particularly impressively to take seventh in that truncated session. Worth a mention too for Marcus Ericsson, who picked up a rare point in Austria last time out, and is 10th in final practice here.
The audience has spoken. And a deal is a deal, my friends. So from hereonin, this live text is a football-free zone.

Qualifying is going to be difficult to call, but I'm going to stick to my guns and go with Lewis Hamilton to get pole at his home race.
1) HAM 1:26.722
2) RAI +0.093
3) BOT +0.642
4) VET +1.129
5) VER +1.290
6) RIC +1.296
The two Toro Rossos are at the foot of the standings - Brendon Hartley because of his horrible crash, and team-mate Pierre Gasly because it was decided not not send him out until it was certain that the car was safe.

Fernando Alonso had a bandage on his right hand yesterday, you might recall. Apparently, he got stung by a bee or a wasp.
Daniel Ricciardo reports losing grip on his final lap, and stays sixth...
250 likes already, by the way. I think I can see where this is heading... :)

There are two questions dominating the thoughts of so many Silverstone fans. One, can Lewis Hamilton win a record sixth British Grand Prix and two, where can I watch the England game?
Qualifying finishes at 3pm, the same time as England kick-off in their World Cup quarter-final against Sweden in Russia. Lewis Hamilton said it had been a great weekend for the country when he won in France on the same day England beat Panama 6-1 and the Arsenal fan will be desperate to see what he can of the match, joking on Friday that he would miss the post-qualifying news conference to watch Gareth Southgate's side.
The fans at Silverstone are blessed with options to watch the game as it will be shown in seven places around the circuit - Main Stage, Sports Zone, Entertainment Zone, National Paddock, Copse Food Mall, Luffield Food Mall and Abbey. "There is no better place to watch this match, what an atmosphere there will be here," is the proud boast from over the tannoy.
Matt and Megan Winstanley from Colchester are among those ready to make "a mad dash" after qualifying to catch the game on a big screen. It is Megan's second British Grand Prix and Matt's first and Matt is confident of an English in, but Megan is not too sure.
Outstanding lap from Charles Leclerc, who is seventh in 1:28.146, within reach of the two Red Bulls. Verstappen stays fifth, with Daniel Ricciardo sixth.
Max Verstappen making a late run here to try to move up from fifth - but Charles Leclerc is actually going quicker than the Dutchman...
I'm particularly impressed by this person, who has set up a Twitter account specifically to tell us to stop talking about football.
I'll do you a deal. If this post gets more than 500 likes, I'll stop talking about football.
Put an F1 driver in the England team
Lot Grundy: I'd replace the Three Lions with the Ferrari badge - we'd never get penalised, and get paid the most even when we lost.
RegularJon: If I were Alonso, I’d not want to play football. He’d end up with boots with one stud on a really wet pitch, half a shin pad and only one sock. He’d want to be subbed after 10 minutes.
This discussion topic is, shall we say, splitting the audience right now...
Fastest in the first sector, fastest in the second sector, Hamilton loses a little time in sector three - but he's quickest overall. 1:26.722, 0.093 seconds faster than Kimi Raikkonen. Eight minutes left.
Raikkonen is flying so much, he goes quicker again - 1:26.815. He's now 0.549 seconds quicker than Bottas. Lewis Hamilton is on his out lap on fresh soft tyres...
